Hey Folks! I spent the last year and used my bonus to pay off all my credit cards and started an emergency fund. I’m currently about half way to having 6 months of net pay saved. Right now I have the fund evenly split between a “high-yield” (.5%) MM account and a TD brokerage account invested in a in a index fund. My question is would it make more sense to put that brokerage money into a Roth IRA since I could take that principal out in a emergency. Also already maxing out my 401k. Thanks!

Hi friends, I’ve been trying to figure out how to best help my parents in their mid 50s to help save for retirement. They’re immigrants, didn’t understand the value of 401k until recently and couldn’t afford early on (they have 401k now but not a whole lot). They have about 50K extra put aside, I’m trying to figure out if they should add to their mortgage or invest (they are pretty scared of investing) I was thinking some for house payment to bring down principal and rest in Roth, thoughts?

If you live with parents, would you max our Roth 401k ($19.5k) and after-tax retirement account ($15k) instead of investing through an individual brokerage? The after-tax $15k can be rolled into the Roth 401k right? Thinking of doing this since I can pull principal out of my Roth 401k after 5 years. Am I missing something here? Any better options?

I recently changed jobs and my new 401K provider - Principal has very limited MF investment options. My prior employer’s 401K was managed by Fidelity and provided me access to a range of MF options. I believe that the fund options are negotiated by the employer and provider? Two questions. First - I have not rolled over my previous 401K to the new one. Would there be any problems. Second - is there a way I could move my current 401K to another (precious) provider?

Feeling frustrated. Our reentry was delayed again, so I’m trying to get confirmation to continue teaching from home since we have a little baby. Well, admin says we have to get approval from HR, and HR says it’s really up to the principal whom they can’t get a hold of. If I have to go in then I’m taking sick days until my maternity leave kicks in next Thursday. It seems simple enough to me that they would want me to keep teaching my own kids. HR seems to be on my side.

My husband and I (both 27) max out our Roth IRAs each year, have a complete emergency fund, and I’m able to start maxing my 401K this year (he contributes 10% to his 401K - it isn’t possible for him to max his based on his current pay). We contribute 18% extra towards principal on our mortgage each month. We now have about $20k of additional savings we want to figure out what to do with. What would you recommend to someone who is new to stocks/investments?

I have no debt, just refinanced my primary residence (~$500k mortgage, $3000/ month) for which I pay extra principal ($600) every month (to turn 30 years mortgage into 20), maxing out IRA and 401k, have a monthly automatic investment in mutual funds ($800/month) with ~20% growth/y so far, 6m+ in high yield saving account, and save ~$1,500 each month on high yield saving.
What’s my next move for investing?

I spent the last 3 months "growing up" & now I'm ready to go. 1st thing is for me to get my own place. I'd like to buy instead of rent because I don't want to pay someone else's mortgage.

I'm thinking of selling my car & cash out some of my 401k to buy a house. My thought is to put down 3.5% for a FHA loan then make a big payment towards the principal to reduce long-term interest.

Anything wrong with this thinking or anything else I should consider?

Fellow Partners/Principals, how does Partner deferred comp/pension work at PWC and EY. I have direct admit offers (verbally confirmed today) from both. I am also in the process of switching to Principal track Deloitte in the upcoming FY and Deloitte’s pension is based on avg of your best 3 yr. I am hearing that may not be the case at PWC. I would like to account for that in negotiating fair signing bonus and/or annual income offer. I am leaning towards PWC. Thanks in advance!

My husband and I were a bit screwed over by our mortgage lender and did not get to do a down payment (long story), but immediately applied $10k towards principle for a $460k 30 yr VA loan (no PMI). We refinanced recently after 1 year in the house to save an additional $400 a month that we’re putting back into the principal monthly. We max out our Roth IRAs each year and are working towards 15% 401k contributions. We have some additional savings though that I feel we should be doing (cont).

I’ve seen a couple posts lately with comments saying that people should not use a Roth 401k. Does the logic below capture the spirit of that concept?
1. Use trad. 401k to reduce taxable income now. Convert to trad. IRA once retired, then convert gradually to Roth IRA (ladder, SEPP, etc.) at lowest marginal tax rate
2. Use Roth IRA (and/or backdoor Roth) to take advantage of tax free growth and ability to withdraw principal early without penalty
