Should I fear layoffs before even getting staffed as an experienced new joiner, or am I overthinking this?
I joined
EY-Parthenon in NYC (Strategy, PE aligned) in mid October as a sr. Associate, coming from Europe, and have not yet been staffed (have been doing my best to network, but there just aren’t a lot of new engagements starting). I have 2 YOE with strategy consulting.

Is it normal to be threatened to be fired after making mistakes that you had no idea were mistakes in the first place?
I’m a junior litigation associate at a small firm, and the managing partner says things like “you aren’t providing value to the firm” or “you’re being paid to avoid mistakes like these” when I make mistakes due to, what I believe, to be a lack of guidance and instruction. As in, they could be easily avoided with a “please keep in mind X” or something like that. Thoughts?

I am the only Black lawyer at my boutique law firm and the imposter syndrome/weight of it is really starting to weigh on me. I’ve been here two years. My reviews have mostly been fine but it does feel like I am judged harder than my peers and given less responsibility. It doesn’t help that the only other Black associate was fired after only a few months at the firm. I think I have to leave the firm but I guess seeking advice/inspiration/helpful anecdotes. Much appreciated.

How much is typical severance pay if laid off? I’ve heard of numbers between 1 and 6 months but interested in personal anecdotes. For context I’m a mid level associate, so been with my firm for a few years. Haven’t been laid off yet but it’s likely to come in the next couple of months. It wouldn’t be due to COVID and therefore wouldn’t be part of a mass layoff - rather, due to a mix of good and bad reviews and due to the group being slower (even pre-COVID) so my hours are consistently lower.

Our summer associate program is completely virtual and shortened to 1.5 months. They are getting paid full salary and guaranteed offers (for doing nothing basically). Meanwhile I know at least one associate was stealthily laid off, and the firm told us they won’t be reimbursing virtual lunches or coffees etc. and no promise of bonuses (I’ve still been billing close to 200 a month). i know they’re trying to save face and it really irritates me. How do you avoid the “am I next?” feeling of dread when your agency makes layoffs and the tension that comes with it from the rest my team? They just laid off a well liked member of my team spontaneously. I am new and haven’t even really started doing much yet. I’m afraid the rest of my team is going to feel animosity towards me because they will associate me with him being laid off (They let him go in less than a few weeks after I started).
