My firm has laid off 25% of its attorneys and has fired all non-essential staff. I’m terrified/can’t afford to be let go. What can I do? How do I prepare for a potential lay off?

Help!: What do you see as alternatives to layoffs? Our six partners (we’re 100 people total) reduced comp to $0 to save and it’s not enough. 25% of staff is unbooked (high!) with no end in near sight.

Why do the department heads never get laid off in times like these? One head of production or ecd or director of planning must equal three or four real working staff. Business 101right?

Some positive news: though our entire global executive team have taken temporary 20% pay cuts, not a single other staff member has had a pay cut or been laid off. I’m proud and optimistic about our global group, and more than happy to take a cut in the name of saving jobs.

Do you think layoffs would be more probable at a big 4/firm with over 2k staff or boutiques? Why?

My firm pays staff & seniors hourly, with 1.5x pay for overtime. Firm just cut our hours from the normal 58-60 down to 40 a week for the foreseeable future. Should I be concerned about layoffs?

Honestly being laid off sounds pretty good as a staff working 65 hours a week 🤷‍♂️ would be making more money doing nothing.

Anyone read this half-assed email from Canning about how “being about 2% over our projected demand for staff which is now being addressed?” Seems to be a pretty lackadaisical way of addressing layoffs

Laid off today because of drop in workload due to Corona Virus. Experienced attorney but first time working in Biglaw as a Staff Attorney. Should I be asking HR or Attys I worked for Ref Letter?

Called the local Mexico joint which also happens to be a pretty major national chain (not tb). They told me 99% of their staff have been laid off and if this is telling of things to come (cont)

Not sure why the execs keep their jobs and layoff production. Do we need all top-level operation staff when there isn’t much left to operate? I have ahead time seeing C-suite doin any production work

*POSTING THIS ON BEHALF OF A DEAR FRIEND* A former coworker at Rogers & Cowan / PMK was laid off today along with a few other staff members. She’s a Public Relations Executive, with lots of music and entertainment experience. I know these are hard times, but if you know about an agency or brand in need of staff members or freelancers, please don’t hesitate to reach out 🙏🏻 Thanks!

Anyone at Am Law 200 law firms hearing anything about furloughs or layoffs on the attorney or staff side? Not trying to scare anyone, just curious.

Anybody have any good stories about a fellow attorney or staff member who was fired?

How are you dealing with the current admin and paralegal staff layoffs? At my firm we were working as a team and it seems challenging to redistribute work. Not to mention, there’s zero morale.

Does anyone think it’s weird that my firm is bending over backwards to try to keep a first year staff from leaving the firm after she was rated a 2 this year. But now she’s trying to leave and they keep trying to push her to stay saying she can be a partner in 8-9 years and laying it all out in detail. The issue is they laid off other staff (all but her) so maybe that’s it? Find it very odd.

Here’s some shit: I’m staff level (career change, so a few years older than most staff). My 19 yo stepchild got laid off temporarily from their skilled trade job and is able to draw unemployment. They still live with their mom and I provide their healthcare as the stepmom married to their father. Stepchild just got first unemployment check and is making 2x their normal pay. Making more than me (!) while I continue to provide their health insurance. What. the. actual. fuck.

B4 Folks - Do layoffs typically hit harder at the staff level or M+? I’ve heard people say we don’t make enough money to worry about it, but that doesn’t sound correct
