Smart move!!
Sounds like an easy way to get all the work for a campaign that they need and then ghost you afterwards. But I hope that’s not the case and that you click with them. Hope it went well.
UPDATE: I said “Thank you for sending the test my way! With my current full-time work hours, I don’t feel confident that I can produce my best work for this interview in 1.5 days and that may skew the team's opinions about me. That being said, since we have a meeting scheduled I'd love to have the "chemistry" meeting first and if we're all on the same page, I'll absolutely send through the edit.” IT WORKED.
Brilliant job!!! I’m impressed.
This isn't a test of your writing skills. This is a test to see how desperate you are.
Fuck that
Not cool. The beasts are trying to get work for free.
Once had a company ask me to come up with a campaign for them and to consider it a “copy test “. I wrote back telling them I’d gladly do it, for $100/hour and asked how many hours they had allocated.
They didn’t reply.
They said “Totally understand. I'll let the team know! Should things move forward we can get you to complete an edit test down the line!
Looking forward to having you in the office"
How senior are you? Do you have any of this in your book? We used to give copy tests to potential hires coming out of school, but this seems a little over the top
Run! They are asking you to do free work before you’ve even interviewed? If you have 3 years of exp this is a ridiculous ask.
Unless they’re paying you for your time then, no. There’s no way I’d do all that for free
BREAKING: TALENT RECRUITER DISCOVERS EDIT TEST HIDING WITHIN PORTFOLIO ALL ALONG.
Am I insane to say never fucking mind? And if so how do I do it?
This is a LOT. How badly do you want the job?
Sounds like way too much work!
Yikes. I guess if you’re bored and willing enough...
Still going in to meet the team and now I’ll be able to tell if it’s really worth it.
Can we get an update on how the chemistry meeting went, and if anyone internally there mentioned the "edit test"?
They never said you had to bring it in completed, right? Say that you’ll have the edit test sent by whatever day sounds best, after your in-person meeting. (Eg. “By Monday morning.”)
This suuuuucks. A copy test should be about seeing how you think and write. Not a laundry list of tasks for their client/brand
This is an extraordinary amount of work and a huge red flag. You shouldn’t do it, even with a good chemistry meeting. Find a way to say you’re no longer interested unless you really want it. Writing a proper letter from the CEO could easily take half a day on its own. So stupid.
Makes me mad.
Make sure to tell them your hourly rate.
