Absolutely. I have witnessed this. Indian Hindu brahmin partner hiring other Indians who somehow happened to be largely brahmins. I also saw him collaborate primarily with other Indians, and often at off work parties continue to indulge in character assassination of the British because they "stole" India's wealth. And they continue to blame others e.g. British for all of their problems, including the advent of caste based discrimination that is their own making.
This guy sounds like a colonial apologist
I’m not Indian, but I have seen it in action. 2 women were on a project at the same level but different castes and complexion. The lighter skinned North Indian woman always tried to exert control over the darker skinned South Indian woman. She would order the other woman around so much that their team lead noticed and had a talk with her. The team lead let her know that we weren’t doing the caste system thing here on this project. I’ve also been on very large projects with mostly Indians and have seen the segregation and cliques by caste. They try to explain it away with they’re from the same state or university. But it is just another way to hide behind the caste system.
D1, I would see that more as the French sticking with the French and the Czech sticking with the Czech - even more different. The cultures are dramatically different. The languages (not dialects) are completely different, even the scripts are unique. It’s not fair to expect all Indians to bond together. India is a massive country with truly very different cultures across state lines.
This is so unheard of for me tbh. Maybe I live in a bubble. I’ve never had a single caste based interaction in my life - except for having Pandits over for poojas, but I see that more as a profession. My family’s maids and drivers were and treated like anybody else. They sit in our living room and drink tea with us. I don’t even know the castes of my friends. I don’t know that castes of any of my Hindu colleagues. Again - I might be living in a bubble but this has most certainly not been my experience.
Funny thing is, every time I voice this opinion, people are like - oh that’s because you’re upper caste. I was like huh? Wtf? How are you assuming I’m upper caste? So I ask my grandparents what our caste is. Turns out, we’re probably lower middle caste but upper middle class. And that’s something that most non Indians have a really hard time processing.
complete BS -- this is written by some social justice warrior type that does not know the realities
Ok, so would you like to say why/why not you don’t agree? Just trashing it doesn’t advance the discussion any.
I have seen both caste and north/south discrimination on programs and have on occasion needed to make adjustments in teams to address. Also have seen it happen within client organizations. It’s subtle, but you learn to recognize it. Have a background in sociology/gender politics of South Asia so probably more attuned than most.
D1 the north vs south debate is way different. Many aren’t even aware of castes of people coming from a different region. North Indians are typically more outspoken and tend to be louder. Call it prejudice, but it’s true. Colorism could absolutely be a thing. Take it from a South Indian who lived both in south and north India.
Definitely occurs and is more common and subtle than people think. I’ve observed people speculate about other individuals caste identity based on appearance/background. And Brahmins dominate in elite universities and higher levels of management.

It continues to be a discussion while many, especially those belonging to the higher caste, deny it's existence because they don't want the negative press.
I call BS on this. I have worked in industry and consulting for last 14 years and No body gives a crap about it.

Most specific examples cited in the report were about acts of personal prejudice, not the kind of institutional discrimination that would be vulnerable to a legal challenge under such laws. But other examples described the effects of a “hostile environment” at workplaces or schools, which would be covered under civil rights laws. And physical assaults mentioned in the report could be classified as “hate crimes”.
How do you know to which caste someone belongs?
