Lateral as what? Counsel? Non-income partner? What is the path forward there?
Seems like they both have identified as not quite partner but not associate, so counsel on partner track.
You should draft a business plan. Part one, is a narrative of your professional experience and skill-set. Part two, a list of your business contacts and law firm contacts. You are not promising any business, just a foot in the door. Part three is for you to describe the best way that a firm can help you with your client development strategies. The business plan will be used by most firms as the path to partner.

Long term goal is to be partner and develop business. Short term...figure out how it works and begin getting my own clients.
