How do you not break 6 figures as an experience SWE????

like

I understand OP, but I live in a big east coast city and my SWE friends are all starting at around 105-115k first year out of undergrad....

you got yourself scammed in your past SWE role. on the west coast 10 years as a Dev usually gets you at least 130k/year.

like

Yes. But he wasn’t west coast, which also has a much higher CoL

consulting for $120k as a Consultant (strong on the technical and client-facing interviews, not so much on the case study interview).

Joining FB seemed to make me realize that I was extremely lowballed. Anything I can do to increase my earning potential fast in the consulting business?

Would going for an MBA increase my chances in the consulting world?

like

After 10 years of what?

Stick it out at your current firm for a year and see what kind of raise they offer you. If it's not what you're expecting, then start interviewing.

like

120k might not be that bad actually. Next thread down there's someone mentioning 110k for an experienced consultant also joining at the consultant level.

like

Most new grads start with a 90k-120k salary in NYC, some friends as contractors earn around 200k with around 7yoe, I’ve heard in the Bay Area with ~15yoe could earn up to 300k, same thing as devs in NYC working in finance, all are base salaries.

like

What city are you in?

Enabled. What’s up?

Subjectively, the money is great. Shit, I don’t know any experienced engineer around me (outside Deloitte) making this amount. So, I’m immensely grateful for that.

But when I hear on FB of people with 2-5 years experience bagging numbers I didn’t dare dream of, it means they know something that I don’t know on presenting their value (which isn’t necessarily based on client satisfaction or technical skills). And I need to rise to that level as well.

Hmm, well don't let it get to you.

The thing is that in consulting (and other sellside roles), it's often not what you do (or can do) that matters the most. Instead it's the way you structure and present it. It isn't just them presenting their value... the presentation itself is a considerable part of that value.

Firms value structuring, problem-solving and communication skills simply because you'll need to be able to succinctly and clearly present whatever you've done to clients. Then they hopefully become impressed and happy to hand over big bucks. What you do is of secondary importance if clients cannot understand what you've done to extract value from it.

Consulting isn't the most extreme example of this either. IBD analysts can easily pull 100k+ right out of undergrad, and their jobs are definitely not only based on hard skills.

like

Unlucky my dude.

That’s true. I just think that you’ve probably been underpaid for the last good chunk of your life.

Good to see that Deloitte is putting you back on track.

like

You should keep track of what’s happening on the market and on your field so this won’t happen to you again, know the industry you work on as the palm of your hand.

Lol.....why do you think I joined FB? I’ve been on here a week and my mind is already blown with possibilities.

Things will be different from now on.

Now my question.
1. 73k$ is too less for 11 yrs right. Should I accept it go there and change job. Is it easy to change job within 6 months.

2. Should I wait and get my VISA stamped and look for other companies in India who can sponser me and can give better package

Would it be difficult to get a job in IA if most of my experience has been auditing private non-404 asset mgmt funds? I really enjoy process walkthroughs when I have them though. Also, does title matter that much in IA? I’m a manager now, but based on job descriptions it looks like I might have to go for a senior auditor role because audit manager roles generally call for 8+ years from what I’m seeing. Can title be negotiated?

I am in talks with 3 startups for now. One offer is on the horizon. Rest two, interviews will be done this week.

How much to ask? (I'm thinking 45LPA with base >=18 or 20)

My profile:

Currently a part of 'WITCH'

3 YOE

Backend profile, Python automation

PS: 3rd one is a US startup, said they're gonna directly pay in dollars$$ so their offer will surely beat everyone else's, but I'll get it only after clearing interviews.
