Depends on your age, the COL should be pretty comparable. I grew up in NJ all my life and moved to Chicago after school. If you’re young, pick Chicago, it’s much more friendly for young professionals. NJ, and Bridgewater specifically, is either suburban families or local young people who didn’t move out of their home town. Love my home state, but I’d hate living there in my 20s.
+1 on everything said here. All depends on where you are in life. If you’re looking for some night life and still considering NJ, might want to look into living in Morristown, although I’m not sure how that traffic would be. Either way, Chicago is still a way better city if you’re looking to pop off
CHICAGO
Chicagoooooo 🧳
You guys are acting like NJ is equivalent to some remote town in Nebraska. Get a grip
Bridgewater is about a 45 min commute from Jersey city which is a 30 min 1 train ride away from Manhattan. NJ offer is a no brainer. You’ll save a ton PLUS get to enjoy the life in Manhattan and have a good quieter nice suburban home to live in.
new jersey where? after col adjustment it’s pretty similar
Ooph they both suck, but NJ has more hills and better Italian food. NJ
Where in NJ
Bridgewater, NJ
Lived in Chicago, worked in Bridgewater. I would choose Bridgewater over any Chicago suburb, but if you want city life, well Bridgewater obviously isn't much of a city.
Def NJ. Reverse commute to nyc
Does a train go close enough to the office to avoid having a car in the city though?
NJ. More $ and less colder than Chicago. Major airports nearby for nonstop flights to most countries. And you can easily go to NYC or Philly or DC anytime.
I would pick Chicago, unless you already have kids and want to live in the suburbs. Investigate if the NJ company has shuttle busses to help employees in NYC commute. If they do, then it is a tie, assuming you don't have kids. And what are the career growth prospects? Will the 130k go somewhere, while you're stuck at 165k? Will 2-3 years at the 165k job allow you to go to Chicago for 195k?
Well with a higher salary, that number becomes your new floor. Subsequent roles at a new comp will probably need to account for that. Plus your social security contribution will be oh so slighty higher in NJ --- $180/year.
NJ
Nj offer is a no brainer:
Live in Jersey City which is mid way between Manhattan and Bridgewater (30 min commute either way).
Amazing public transport which you’ll not find in Chicago
Close proximity to NYC (which is far better than Chicago)
TC is higher
Low cost of living than Chicago in JC so you’ll save a ton more
Fair enough! Im not agreeing or disagreeing with your opinion of NJ over Chicago. I’m just saying the facts you’ve presented about Chicago aren’t accurate in my experience. Have a good weekend dude
OP what did you decide!
