It takes time to adjust yo the kevel of ficus needed. Take a break, take a quick 10-15 min walk (no screen time!) and then get back at it. It helps me reframe when I don't ask myself (let myself?) feel anything toward an assignment (good or bad), but simply treat it as something that needs to get done, period. So less, "UGH, I wish I didnt need to do X now!" and more, "Partner promised we'd get X to Client tonight. Better get cracking." The mindset shift ir removing your feelings helps a lot. Just...tick it off the list, even if you are tired.

Start earlier, take a break when you hit a wall, like a real break. Back in the office days I would walk around a couple of blocks listening to music or a podcast for 15-20 mins around 4pm most days, get a coffee somewhere outside the office, then the act of going back to the office, taking off my coat and signing back in with fresh coffee in hand felt like starting a new day. A little harder with WFH and honestly I haven’t been doing this, thx for prompting me to remember :)

Do you still have work after the 6 hours? If you're done with everything on your plate, there's not much more you can do. You could ask for more work but be careful what you wish for.

The WFH environment doesn’t help. The wall shows up a lot faster. Starting earlier is the only way I’ve found to get control over billing time.

Good to know. I did my summer in the office and felt a lot more productive. But I started as a first year during the pandemic, so I’ve only been wfh for that.

Definitely take breaks. Even an quick nap if you have time. But the problem is you will be working all day around these breaks to reach 8-10 hours per day.

When we’re all comparing/complaining about hours at the end of the year are we including pro bono hours in that total? I’m nearing 2050 billables for the year but I have another 500 pro bono hours that should be added on. At the same time, I keep hearing about all these people straight billing 2,400+. Trying to determine if I should’ve tried to pick up more billable work to stay in the middle of the pack (i.e. not interested in partnership, just trying not to get canned).

I’m thankfully hitting my hours, but my firm keeps passing non-billable work my way. I am grateful for the opportunities, but this type of work always seems to find its way to the female associates at my firm. We have been told that non-billable work is irrelevant in terms of our annual hours. Any tips on how to navigate this in a thoughtful way? I want to be a team-player, but I believe that others need to step up to the plate.

I passed all 4 exams and I refuse to give let that go to waste...... how do I tell my employer I'll be going to school in a way that they'll still let me work part time? Extremely nervous they're just going to let me go.

What matters more - billable hours or quality of work? It seems like I have a good reputation for always being available, but personally, I don't think I am doing my best work as I'm overloaded. Does billing well matter more than quality work? Just started in the spring as midlevel.

Need advice for resigning while on bench. I already have a start date with the new employer. Should I do a traditional two week notice or give <=1 week notice instead? My goal is to not burn bridges, but I also don’t want to get let go on the spot since I have nothing to “wrap up” besides HR tasks. I’ve read on here that sometimes they will let you go day of and pay you out for two weeks but I don’t see why any firm would do that for somebody not currently performing billable work...

This may be just a naive/dumb question, but how do you relax when you’ve got a really stressful file? I’m a junior and I’ve been putting in ~10ish billable hours a day recently, which is more than I’m used to. The evenings (post-8pm) are generally my time to decompress - read a book, watch dumb tv, whatever - but it’s been all work lately until 10 or 11pm and I struggle to go straight from work to bed. Any insight on what everyone else does?
