2.5 years ago I had a base of $90K with 8 years of experience. Jumped on the consulting wagon and I just turned down an offer for $185K base + $70K RSUs because it's below my current comp. Thanks consulting. (I know haters out there think $200k is poor, but I didn't break six figures until my 30s).

I have a former client, now a good friend, who is amazing at what he does (same niche as me) but has spent his whole career at the same company (~10 years). I make almost double what he does with half the experience since I was aggressive in jumping/negotiating. We had an in-depth conversation about the differences in our strategies one day and now he’s interviewing for professional services roles around where I am comp-wise. He recently texted me “I should have done this a long tome ago.” It really can be life changing since I also started in industry and have almost tripled my own comp.

Can I DM you? I feel stuck but am nervous about travel.

My path is not one to follow. I had little formal education or credentials, but a lot of skills. I caught a lucky break and got a powerful consulting brand on my resume. Now I have the consulting toolkit, brand, plus additional skills and experience that employees value. Because of my weirdly broad background, I can comfortably deal with a lot of situations that many lifer consultants can't. I'm a generalist consultant with a couple of niches I can draw on if needed. My last appraisal said the words most often used to describe me are, "Quantitative and versatile with a great client manner." I've had those skills for years but couldn't convincingly communicate this in an interview or get many opportunities to even demonstrate my capabilities. My big takeaway over the last couple of years is the power of a global brand on your resume. It just opens more doors than does aptitude.

My firm was one of the firms that gave covid bonuses but did not specify whether everyone was getting it. I didn’t make my hours this year because I was on maternity leave and a bunch of my cases ended 1-2 months before I went out so I had lower hours before I started my leave. I couldn’t make up for those lost hours when I was back since I was working from home with an infant because of covid. I didn’t get the covid bonus, which in my mind is ironic considering the circumstances. (Cont.)
