Oh god. I hear ya. Sounds rough.

I would Just bill your damn time then. Either he won’t notice or he will set you straight and you will know what to do after some slightly unpleasant, but constructive, feedback.

Seems like a win-win, unless the guy is an actual a$$, which is a whole different game. But from what you described he just sounds eccentric. Good luck!

Bill it. Let the boss decide what does and doesn’t get passed on to the client when it’s time to send out invoices.

See if you can also get your boss to commit to a once per month meeting where he can review work and case status updates and you can clarify general concerns. If he can’t spare the time for a single one or two hour meeting per month then that’s a troubling sign.

Why can’t you ask the partner?

And the 12:06 phone call... 0.2 or 0.3?

I worked for a partner that billed $100 to an individual client for an email reminder about a filing deadline coming up with a bunch of necessary info for the client to have. Really was reasonable. If we didn’t file on time he’d lose the rights to his invention.

The client proceeded to call ME on my personal cell phone(1L clerk at the time), left a 60 second voicemail about how insane that was and that he wants a referral to an attorney that won’t do that, and then completely ghosted both the partner and me. Won’t answer a text, call, email, letter, nothing, all over a $100 email that the partner immediately agreed to waive.

Idk if that answers your question since the partner billed the time, not me. Just a fun story about how nutty individuals as clients can be.

It is counter intuitive, but the small bills are really the ones that get the most flak

Bill your time. Nothing worse than cutting your own time. Let the partner do if he thinks it’s too long.

Hot Take: Starting your own solo practice with less than 5 years experience is malpractice.

I accepted a position as an associate at a boutique family law firm about 2 months ago. This is my second job as an attorney. My first role was unrelated to family law. With that being said—I’m learning new things every single day.
However, I’ve noticed that my supervisor has a tendency to tell me that I’m going to argue a Motion for one of her cases that I know nothing about (I am assigned my own caseload) the DAY BEFORE the scheduled motion hearing.

Just interviewed with a firm and it seems great. I was told that although associates are given an annual billing requirement, the firm focuses more on your “receipts” rather than hours billed. I understood that to mean that the firm is more focused on whether or not your client pays your invoice. Has anyone worked for a firm like this?

I’m applying for a job that requires a writing sample. I would like to submit a sample that was filed and used in a case. The problem is, all of the samples I can submit also include a partner in the signature block and were reviewed before filing. Any tips on writing a cover letter explaining that, aside from minor revisions by the partner, the writing is my own?

Throughout our legal careers, we’re told to reach out to the partner (or mid/senior assoc if available) if we have questions.

I’m a second year L&E lit associate and the partner wants us running point on all our cases. However, he literally never responds to questions I have on case handling/strategy, and is super vague when he does answer questions

Is this normal? If so, aside from just badgering him (which annoys him), what can I do?

I hate when people use bankruptcy to get out of commitments. Chapter 13 needs to be in place but it does give debtors a way to screw over lenders out of spite, if someone is willing to tank their credit for whatever reason

Anyone else dealing with phone addiction? My mental health is in the toilet rn and I can’t stop using social media/scrolling endlessly/refreshing my work email every few minutes, and it’s really affecting my life. Advice for young attorneys dealing with non-billable workload? I’m still my first two months at my firm but a ton of the work I’m being assigned is non-billable. I need some direction. My sister-in-law's mother has early onset dementia and is in a memory care home as she cannot take care of herself and requires too much care for her kids to take on personally. While in the home today, she had a seizure and fell to the ground. Per the cameras in her room, she was down for 25 min. She got herself up and fell again. She wasn't found for another 17 min. This is the second time this has happened. Does anyone have any solid attorney (continued in comments)

Thoughts on leaving biglaw to work as in-house counsel in a family small business? I’ve been a litigation associate for 4 years and don’t think it is for me (billable hours, work-life balance, etc.). My father would like me to join his real estate development co. I have no student loans, mortgage, or kids FWIW.
