2 +yrs out of law school. @ Civ defense firm; high case load; no mentoring; do I take 15k cut offer from reputable firm promising lower case load, focus on mentoring, promising first chair exp?

Depends how bad that 15k cut hurts and how much faith you have in the mentoring/first chair offer, but I’d say probably yes. In my experience most firms are absolutely terrible at mentoring or getting their associates first chair experience - but it does exist

like

I would take those promises with a grain of salt. But if you’re unhappy enough where you are that it doesn’t matter if all of what the new firm is promising you is real or not, then go for it.

For that much of a cut I’d go plaintiff side

I would stay where you are and attempt to solicit more mentoring from a senior associate/partner. Seek permission and support to join and engage with your local defense organization or DRI and seek mentoring from those.

Hi fishes,

I have the following 2 offers..

Cognizant- 21L fixed and 1.5L variable
PWC - 22L fixed

This is for a guidewire role.
Which is a better offer? What would be a good option for growth wrt role, salary etc.
Also, PWC claims to offer variable based on their fixed CTC based on the ratings.. is this true ? How much is the avg percentage given?

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I’m moving to LA from Chicago, base 90k - no debt. I live in a 1BD rn and have been browsing the market in LA to get an idea of rent. I’m mainly looking west of DTLA (ktown, la brea, pico rob, etc)it’s seeming like a 1BD may be out of reach. I’m not looking to pay more than $1800/mo. Any suggestions on neighborhoods I should consider? I’d like to be near grocery, restaurants, and would need parking. I enjoy being outdoors and would look to go on hikes/runs in my free time if that helps. TIA!

Back when I was getting started in the food world, I worked flipping burgers at In-n-Out. A man came in and said the burgers he had gotten weren’t right. He dumped the food on the counter and then he started throwing them back behind the counter. We gave him a refund and then his demeanor completely changed. He was calmer and he told us to have a great day as he left us to clean up the mess he made.

I would appreciate any advice on how to stay on top of non urgent tasks. As a 2nd year, I’m often tapped to handle tedious tasks that need to get done quickly. Tbh, I like urgent matters. It motivates me and helps me focus. I admittedly struggle to care about checking in on DWQs, record requests, OC’s discovery, scheduling matters, etc. Especially with so many cases. I definitely rely heavily (maybe over rely?) on the paralegals for these sort of things. Any tips?

I’m a current biglaw associate thinking of lateraling to Quinn Emanuel. Looking for a more dynamic and trial-focused litigation practice, but I’m a little put off by how poorly Quinn seems to invest in support (tech, paralegals, etc) and generally seems to nickel and dime its associates. Curious how these issues feel for Quinn associates on a day to day basis.

I’m a midlevel who recently joined a new firm where my group is very busy, so my teams encourage pushing work down to junior associates. Seems great, but the problem is that whenever I give a junior associate a drafting assignment that’s not rote document processing, I have to redraft the entire thing and it takes just as long or longer than if I had done the work myself. I try to ask them to revise when I can, but we often don’t have time for more rounds of that. How can I handle this better?

Junior litigators, how are you all doing? Am I the only one finding it impossible to manage my own caseload, take on new urgent assignments from partners, and not be burnt out right now? Getting to the point where I’m so behind that I sometimes feel too overwhelmed to even start on my task list. Doesn’t help that partners take forever to review my work so i can get the product to the client. Looking for commiseration & encouragement that things will look up lol!

How do you approach collecting documents from a client in response to discovery requests? Particularly with broad and vague document requests that leave you guessing about what the other side is looking for, even after you meet and confer. I’m realizing no one ever taught me a systematic approach to this problem. And that big, name-brand companies are absolutely terrible about record-keeping or even knowing what records they have.
