20? And you are already tired? Cmon...
100 is when you start getting tired. Not 20
You miss 100% of the shits you don’t give. (Or something like that.) It’s a numbers game so keep applying! You’ve got this OP!
Guys, really don’t want to sound like a scum bag. But you both are creatives. Finding a job is when you should be more creative.
One single agency have:
1) Talent manager
2) Creative recruiter
3) Creative director 1
4) Creative director 2
5) Creative senior 1 (art)
6) Creative senior 2 (copy)
So, just in one place, you can send 6 emails at the bare minimum. Not to mention all the big agencies that have Executive Creative Directors on top of many creative directors. Do the math.
This is New York City, folks. EVERY person in the world is trying to be here. Do you really wanna stay with conventional methods to find a job?
I should be charging you for this.
@SAD 1 but this is my point - how can you all be emailing 100+ places when everyone who is anyone advises you to choose a place where you have quality leaders and quality work over a high paycheck or a promotion etc?
Yes your goals can be different and maybe you just want a fat paycheck and in that case there may be 100+ mediocre places or vayner media or whatever hiring but is that where you want to be?? I just can't believe you emailed 100+ places and you were seriously excited about working at all of them.
Sometimes it’s about more than emailing. Get to an industry event and talk to some people in person. That way they know you and are willing to spend 5-10 minutes on your book
I get SAD 1’s point, emailing seems fruitless and networking events are lame. However, all it takes is that one person to dig your work and make the reco to bring you in. All it takes is the one convo with the right semi-sober industry person and you have an in. Networking is not easy, but hunger for an opportunity speaks more volumes than rolling the cold resume dice
I had that problem when I was new here last year - am international so anyone who would take me was a huge bonus because time limit etc etc and then I took the job I'm at now and I'm regretting it so much because I hate it and should have waited for the right place, not just a place.
Are you currently at a job or in a situation where you can wait out the right opportunity? If so, hang tight. I totally get the wisdom behind not wanting to go from one crappy job to another out of desperation. Also, just because a recruiter ignored doesn’t mean the opportunity is lost (unless they explicitly passed I guess). Can you ask them for feedback on why they passed? Maybe have a friend or mentor look at your book for tips In the meantime, find ways to network with the ppl who work where you want to be. Lastly, I think it’s great to have a list of your top shops but I always try to keep an open mind while I’m on the job hunt. Determine what’s most important to you and go from there. (The work, the clients, the size, the title, the pay, the city, etc.)
SS 1 - I’m applying for Jr roles and unfortunately am on a visa for a few months. So every second counts to prove myself. My book is pretty solid according to feedback at least. Not mind blowing but definitely Jr worthy. The main problem is the recruiter/talent managers aren’t even looking at my book or responding at all. I guess it’s a good thing but I haven’t even been rejected lol i just don’t hear back. I appreciate the support though 🙏🏻
Actually not a bad open rate IMO. An old salesman taught me that every call is that much closer to a sale. I try to remember that.
👆👆👆 Get the f out there and network. That is the best way to make that happen. Cold calling resumes are an absolute crap shoot
Portfolio reviews have structure and you can actually learn a thing or two. One Show is great in the spring, but there are others
If you're applying to junior positions, I would consider applying to internships for the summer. It's application season too. That's where we hire all of our juniors. It gives us a chance to get to know them and them a chance to prove themselves before they're hired full time.
SAD 1 - just because I’m a copywriter doesn’t mean everything i do has to be a demonstration of my writing. That’s like saying all writers love reading. Not true.
I don’t know where you picked up that I think I’m too creative. I was just merely saying that is not my style and I don’t want to get hired pretending to be someone I’m not. That’s the quickest way to burning out. Nobody wants to hear that this one guy has emailed the entire office for a way in. Literally, i may as well say Desperate in the subject line.
By the way, I’m over 30. So wrong demographic buddy.
Oh also. It’s millennials not millenniums. Unless of course, you were actually referring to a period of 1000 years which I have no idea why you would.
But that's the thing - shouldn't I be more selective about where I'm applying? I don't want my next move to be a mistake like my current one. I don't have an unending list of places I want to work. There are at most 15 shops I really want to be at. What do you do when those 15 recruiters passed you up? Reach out to creatives?
It is fucking emotionally draining. Thinking that you aren't getting views or responses because you just aren't good enough.. Or your emails weren't catchy enough but you tried 10 different email styles and the two who responded were to the email style you thought was meh... You need one more personality piece.. Or maybe if you had another award or two...
*anxiety*
SAD 1 - no CD i have ever spoken to has ever said to reach out to them personally unless you know them. The best case is they will refer you to the recruiter/talent manager and you’re back square one. Heckling everyone until someone is forced to let you in is not exactly the best way for an agency to like you. You just come across as try hard and annoying. I want a job but I want to get hired for me. Some people make big campaigns to get hired. Some people do stunts. Great but that isn’t all creatives.
Cw 1 - I’m applying for Jr roles and am an international. So I pretty much fire away anywhere that may give me a shot. If you don’t have that to worry about then I guess you could be a little selective because you don’t exactly have a time limit. And if they check out your work, it’s already going somewhere. I don’t understand why they aren’t even looking at my book. Stirs the mind up for sure
Cw 1 - if you have the visa down then you should definitely be selective and wait for an opening at an agency you feel is right.
SAD 1 - there aren’t that many agencies that I can find in NY. If there is some agency directory that I’m missing out please share because I’m all for it lol
Also i said 20+ not to sound like I’m full of shit. I wrote to more than that
