20 years of award-winning Copy/CD experience, but it’s been recommended that I cut the first 5 years of it. This would remove agencies from my Resumé like CP+B, but would looking younger be worth it?

Ageism. People are under stupid impressions that if you’re over 30 you’re not the hip to pop culture and you’re a digital idiot that doesn’t know what Snapchat is. Weirdly enough it’s old CCOs and CEOs who think this.

If your website has a”broadcast section” that’s more concerning than than the cv trimming. Your work should be by client or project. Dividing it by media channel def makes you seem old school

I have the same issue and I'm 25+ yrs in biz. I got around it by including the job on my resume but not the years. So far no one has asked about what years I worked there

Ageism is very real. I was at an agency that was merged with another in the holding company to shore up the bigger agency because they were losing business and we were winning it. They told us if course that "no one would be laid off" and had a big merger party. Then they systematically laid off 90% or more of the creatives from the smaller agency over the age of 40-45 in small batches over the next 2 years . The few that survived were forced to do 100% pharma as their previous accounts were given to others. They are so aware of the intentional ageism that when they laid people off they covered themselves by giving everyone in their severance packet, a document stating all the people they laid off by title and age, and would include one younger person in the layoffs along with the 15-20 older ones so they could argue "hey look not everyone was over 40"

IMO age discrimination in our industry is widespread, rampant and unchecked ... and no one has done anything about it. Average age of most age is under 30. This is supposed to be illegal. And no, it's not about money ... these ACDs and CDs are being paid the same or better for less experience than the older folk.

OP: after you list out the most recent 5-7 years on your resume by agency, titles and dates, roll all the rest into one bullet point as “additional agency exp” and list the older agencies without dates 👍🏼

Being someone in my 40s it makes me sad to see this in writing even though I know and experienced ageism in the industry...

like

Is that older work still in your book, or is it just a resume mention? There are ways to get around dates and still include relevant experience in terms of resume format. Ageism is real. I’ve seen it and I hate it

👆🏻I agree with CR2. Dividing the portfolio by media is perceived as a very old school practice. Doing it by client is a more contemporary way of presenting work.
@CDMNY That sounds fucking awful and enraging. What kills me is that most of the people discriminating are also older people in higher up positions.

I’m 46 and fortunately could pass for 10 years younger, but I’m planning on just being agency side a little longer and then I’m gonna switch client side. This practice is much less prevalent there than it is in agencies .

like

👆 Truth. Try to organize by campaign. If you can move random creative under a campaign, do it. People want to see that you can express an idea in different media.

ACD 1 - > yes I look 10 years younger also and that's probably the only reason I still get bites though they are more often than not pharma even though most of my experience is in general. They ave other ways of figuring out your age (e.g. When you graduated college ) -- and I've heard when you apply for jobs online they put everyone and their age in one big database and share it with other agencies in the holding company. Cant independently confirm that - wish there was an HR whistleblower who would confess the ageism we all know exists.

I’ve got the same predicament. I got Chiat in there and it looks good, but it was pretty early in my career.

Wait... why? Why look less experienced? Who told you to do that?

@Creative Recruiter 1, my work is organized by campaign, there’s just one tab for TV because I have gotten asked about it specifically, and I only show 8 campaigns but have produced 30+ tv spots.

like

Better to have your work by client or media type?

like

@Creative Recruiter 1, some of the older work (2 tv spots) is still in my book, but kinda buried at the end of the broadcast section. How can you get around dates without looking fishy?

I am a strategist with a creative soul. Has anyone ever done the jump from strategy/ planning to creative? I have a creative brand strategy background with some experience copywriting. As an associate director I don’t want to digress in my career but am learning I am more interested and excited by coming up with big creative ideas then writing briefs. Every time I sit in a creative review I question my role in strategy. Any advice?

I don't think I'm super amazing at my job, but I'm also not so bad that I would be fired. I'm just..average and I haven't been able to get to that rockstar level. The issue is obviously me, I don't really grasp certain areas and I am decent but not great at client relationship. Assuming that my team, work life balance, and salary is decent, is this a sign that this isn't for me? Been in agency world for a while in a few different roles and I feel like I've just been average in all of them..
