2019 grad in big law entertainment litigation, thinking about exit options. I don’t think I would like transactional work very much, but am nervous that if I stick in lit too long, my in-house options, particularly within entertainment and/or FAANG are going to be extremely slim. Any advice?

It’s not your tenure in litigation that’s going to limit you so much as the fact that you don’t sound open to switching to transactional work. In-house litigation roles do exist, but are a small subset, especially since you’re also limiting your potential employers so narrowly.

If you don’t like transactional work you probably wouldn’t like in-house.

When would be an appropriate time to discuss a title change/maybe a comp increase? I work for a tech startup about to enter series B. I am quickly coming up on 1 year with the company. This is my first full time post undergrad. However my job role expanded significantly early on. Current salary is in the $60-70k ballpark. The catch is that I am the only one doing all finance, accounting, investor relations... honestly more interested in a new title. I took the job for the experience, not money.

I accepted my role about a year ago. They didn’t offer me my asking number but met me in the middle. I was told by the director that we could reassess my salary after my first year. Performance reviews happen in March so when I had mine , I wasn’t even at a year mark. I didn’t bring up pay then because it seemed too soon, but now im kicking myself for not at least pointing to a future conversation about it. With inflation, I need more than my previous number , when’s the best time to ask?

Has anyone recently bought a bike? Apparently there’s a shortage bc of the pandemic. I finally found a road bike that’s the right size for me and everything but it’s $1400. I understand this is not a lot when you’re really into the activity, but it feels a bit steep to drop on a brand new hobby/way to increase exercise. Would love to hear if anyone else recently invested in a bike and what your thoughts were after a few months/long term.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Just got turned down by Amazon after two extensive writing assignments, 6 interviews and hours spent preparing. And their policy doesn’t allow them to give feedback when an offer is not made. Talk about a bruised ego. The only silver lining is staying long enough to collect the October and January big law bonuses and then I’m out! The question is where else pays like Amazon?!

Would this be a bad time to switch positions for the purposes of career progression and higher compensation? My current position seems stable but no room for growth and also a disorganized mess, not a very mature legal department. On one hand I’m the only that knows what they’re doing on the other hand i would like to go somewhere where I can learn more how a mature legal department should operate within a legally savvy business. But seems like a risky move in this economic climate?

Big law associate about a year away from partner, but considering taking an in house offer at a public company with small legal department (would be GC, paralegal, and me). I’m excited about the opportunity but worried about new responsibility leaving a narrow practice area (lending) into a department where I’d be somewhat on my own handling all types of legal matters. Hopefully just imposter syndrome but anyone start in house in similar boat and how did it go/any advice?

Just looking for general info of how in-house (at major company) relates to big law (V25).

Has anyone recently made the switch to in house and now feel unorganized and less productive than when billing hours? For what it is worth, I’ve received good reviews and my superiors seems to be pleased with my work. Litigation was just so task based because of needing to hit billables, so without that requirement I feel a little like a fish out of water.

I’m interviewing and considering leaving the law and nice in-house job (work 20-30hrs/week, clocking out at 5pm, no evening or weekend work, comp $215k, doing mainly commercial, though not much mobility) for a business-side role within the cap markets team at a fund doing structured finance. Many unknowns, but comp will be at least $400 base, $200 bonus, soon managing a team and serious career progression, more hours/week (TBD how much), plus deal driven. Any thoughts on making this switch?

I just received an offer for a job I am very excited about. Base is within reasonable range and I will likely go back and ask for a bit more there. The company also offers a yearly cash bonus based on the performance of the company as well as a stock grant. Those are determined based on percentages of base salary. Is it a sign to not leave yet if I’m hesitant to leave big law despite receiving offers at good companies? I am a junior associate that’s really burned out and yet I fear making the leap because of “missing” people I’ve worked with (who probably won’t remember me much) and all the hopes I had for myself when I first summered. But I also know this job has been extremely tough on my health and my family and I regretted it the first time I turned down an offer.
