My base loc is Bengaluru, but currently I am not mandatorily required to work from office, and have been working from home since I joined Deloitte in July. Should I talk to my manager and go back to my hometown Kolkata and work from there? Staying in PG all day and working from here is not quite feasible for me. Suggest pls. Deloitte India

How do you give notice in big law?
I interviewed with Firm A months ago and accepted a position to start this upcoming fall. Group leader called me to offer the position back in November 2020. Besides interviewing with partners at the firms, and diligent follow ups notifying them of my interest to get started, no communication has transpired since. It turns out that I accepted a better offer w/ Firm B for personal reasons and won’t be going to Firm A. What is the best way to notify Firm A? Call/email group leader? Call/email HR?

I would be concerned. And actively engaging with my practice group leadership to proactively manage any negative perspective on my low hours. I.e., ask for a meeting, explicitly raise this concern, give an up front explanation, which is very reasonable—new parent leave.

Yeah i mean id worry some. 60% of pro rated target is quite low, thats what 1100 annualized? Not saying freak out but IF someone is getting let go and it comes down to you v someone whose been there 2-3 years and made hours or near thats a tough contrast.

Yeah 1100 *annualized*

I lateraled in February and took six weeks of parental leave and have had substantial pro Bono hours for first time in my career 5th year M&A
This happened to me to (except not lateral). When I expressed to a higher up partner that I was concerned about my low hours, he said not to worry about it and that this just happens when you go on paternity leave. Then, about 2-3 months after this conversation, this same partner told me in a formal meeting that it’ll now take longer for me to get promoted to partner (if at all) with a vague explanation. Be concerned. Hustle for work. Big law only makes money from the billable hour. Even if you have a good year while taking leave, the firm will still see it as a loss when it comes to PPL. A slow year while taking leave is even worse. Good luck!
Happy to talk privately about that!

How long was the leave?
16 weeks
I wouldn't be concerned. I took 6 months of leave this year and am now annualizing about 975. There's inevitable ramp up and ramp down, plus a slow market right now. So oh well!
Thanks, I appreciate that. I’m just overly concerned since I’m a lateral and obviously the market is down.
