$20k in credit card debt due to emergency medical bills this year. I work for a mid-sized firm, and our insurance refused to cover some testing that the doctors said was vital. I’ve appealed twice.

Hang in there OP and C1. Depending on the type of consulting you do, one option would be to store your stuff with your parents or a friend, and get your project to pay for hotels for the weekends instead of travel; I know this is an option at D, and I’ve had a few friends do this successfully

like

Despite requesting travel I’ve been local for the past year and a half, and the current project has no end in sight. If this becomes an option I’d love to do that. It would save a lot of money!

Why would you pay medical bills on a credit card? If you pay monthly they can’t charge you interest or send you to collections. Hospitals have payment plans. It is too late now, but for future reference never pay medical bills your can’t afford on a credit card. Set up a payment plan!

I was very, very sick and not in the best frame of mind to be making decisions. I know better for next time though.

Call the hospital billing department and say you are under water and likely unable to pay the bills. Ask if they are able to adjust the billing schedule or reduce to face amount for you. Surprisingly, this can work.

likehelpful

Yes, there are often self-pay discounts if you sign up for payment plan or simply ask. Good luck!

helpful

Make sure you have someone helping with your taxes this year. If you are not successful with the appeal, you can at least get some tax treatment I think.

Just reading about this right now. Thanks you!

Just FYI: medical debt does not impact your credit score

like

CA1 they can only send you to collections if you aren’t paying something monthly.

Also, find a CC that offers 0% interest for balance transfers. That’ll save you a ton on interest

No luck. I was waiting tables before starting in consulting and already used up the little savings I had. I’m feeling weighed down because I’ll be paying this for the next two years. I live in a high COL city and I’m stuck in this lease for six months. Aside from getting five roommates when the lease is up, what are some other things I can do to cut down costs or pay down the debt quicker? I’m feeling hopeless.

I’m in the same boat OP. I feel your struggle

Not sure if it helps: Most states have a time limit (like a statute of limitations) on how long debt is collectable. After a certain point they have to pretty much drop it and collections can't get your money. You're credit score will be impacted any time you don't pay anything, but if you can't make the payments you can negotiate a deal. You can also hire experts to do this for you. Though, again, any missed payments will impact you're credit score.

If you get sent to collections you have options. This company specializes in fighting those cases. Very interesting stuff. https://www.allservicefinancial.com/

Do you budget every dollar you make

I paid off $12k of debt within a1.5 years of using YNAB - you can do it!

Here's something no one talks about but I guarantee it works (I've seen it work first hand). Insurance companies take government money so they fear the government. My suggestion is contact your reps (state and fed legislature) and complain. If the rep responds to them they'll change they're mind very quickly. You probably won't be the first person to do that either, so if that's the case it'll have even more impact.

Life of non-immigrants depend on the Visa they hold and it’s so sad these companies don’t have a team where we can speak to someone immediately in case of a visa emergency situation . In EY you need to submit a form and wait for days together to get a reply from a human. Mean time you would have gone through 5 anxiety attacks.

3 YoE in health consulting (generalist w/agile and change management experience), and finally received a secret clearance. But now concerned I'm pigeonholing myself over the next 3 years as I think a lot of health work at my firm that requires clearances are more "butts in seats" My goal is to learn as much as I can over next 3 years (WLB is not a concern). With that said, despite the job security of a clearance, would it be better to consider looking at commercial consulting roles?

In a world of remote consulting work…. How long can the US maintain its high premium over European and, esp. developing market consulting? Both price tag to clients and significantly higher salaries for the people. I imagine may move faster at Big 4, etc. than MBB, but within MBB the huge cost and salary differentials feel… increasingly hard to maintain (even though I think the differential has actually gotten bigger, not smaller in the last two years). Thoughts?
