I’m doing 2100 on an 80k base and am making monthly contributions to Roth (and obvi 401k but that’s automatically out of my paycheck). Not saving a huge amount but after a couple bad roommate situations I needed to live alone for my mental health

DC isn’t that expensive. Live in a studio for $1700. Save some money so you can travel and stuff.

I’m at $1750 rent at 100k salary in Baltimore (moved from a $1100 crappy Boston apartment with no AC and 2 roommates, terrible for mental health and feeling happy at home) and thought that the benefit of living alone in a building with amenities, especially during the pandemic and WFH, was worth spending the extra $$, even though I could’ve found a 1BR in a townhome or lived with roommates. It’s definitely up to you what is worth your money, but I’m putting away ~$2500 a month into HYSA after maxing 401k and Roth IRA

smart

Yes! I was thinking of moving to DC suburbs in the next few years, but I’ll have to see what times on the MARC are from various towns, because it may be worth saving the $

I think you can swing it. Would be nice to have a roommate to help out but you won’t go broke. The no car and no debt definitely helps.

In nyc, same exact situation, 110k base, 2.1k rent but I have roommates

You can do it….but I’d personally try for cheaper if you’re not sacrificing much happiness. Extra compounding $$$ brings happiness too.

Totally up to what you value… Personally i value being close to things which allows me to have essentially a $50 transportation cost a month with Uber and Biking and walking. So I’ll totally spend more on rent. I value walkability and a clean space. As long as you can put 15 % - 25 % to investments and retirement I don’t see any problem with the above. Roommates can actually cost more than living alone if they are crazy.

I‘ve been in a relationship for 2 years, and my avoidant tendencies flare up every so often when I feel let down by my SO — e.g., usually when he’s blanked on something he should have done to make me feel more supported in work or social contexts. He knows this about me and supports me wholeheartedly as I continue to work through it — but I know I can be quite cold and distant in these rare but painful moments. How do others work through this, if at all?

Any advice on where you would put it? Unfortunately can’t do I-bonds due to timing and the only other “savings account” option that has a high yield are stable coin accounts which themselves entail high to unknown amounts of risk.

Potentially dumb question but I’m doing a backdoor Roth conversion using Schwab and I added my 6000 for the year to my traditional IRA and want to convert it now without buying anything (keeping as cash) so I don’t have to deal with taxes or a loss before year end on the conversion. My question is, once I convert all of the cash to my Roth IRA from the traditional IRA can I buy stocks with that money? I wasn’t sure if investments were “locked in” or some such weird thing when doing a conversion.
