Unpopular opinion: the latest changes to H1B visa program are acceptable and ultimately serve a good purpose in the long run.

OP I am going against the crowd in this one. I am in the same boat, being on a Visa etc, difficulty in committing to a life here as everything can change in a day. However, to those saying it's not worth it: why are you all still here? If the uncertainty isnt worth potentially being able to live here for the rest of your lives, why haven't you moved back yet? OP, you came here for a reason, hopefully fully knowing what uncertainties and risks come with it. I wouldn't throw everything you worked so hard towards away. Instead, have a viable plan B that eliminates some of that anxiety you may have.
Yes I did, EY US to EY Aus. Got EY Canada too, but the cost basis was too low and I did not want to compromise on lifestyle so chose Sydney. Can't stand lockdown for 5 months every year due to cold
OP: not suggesting anything but sharing my experience. I moved in 2016 from Delhi on H1B. In hindsight, I was doing fairly well in India (management consulting w/ a top tier firm with no MBA) and tbh, the lifestyle affordability has been pretty much the same. I am 31 yrs old now and can say no matter where you go there will always be some sort of uncertainty. Yeah probably not of Visa back in India but other things for sure. I think we unnecessarily think too much. If I were you, I will just go with the flow. If you are happy now, don’t worry about the visa. No one is going to throw you away like that. You are among the smartest lot with a masters education. And in worst to worst case scenario, if your visa gets revoked, with current globalized world you can pretty much start a life anywhere in less than a week.
Also you are just 24. I wouldn’t think about “settling in” until I really have a super pressing personal need (like kids dependency in future)
Just my 2 cents
Yes it’s becomes really difficult once you have developed a friend circle here, have children, mortgage and car. The thought of wrapping up everything is something which we will need to overcome if we are in that situation. It may take a few months to adjust but we adjusted when came to US with 2 suitcases, big dreams and hope. Also if you are talented it won’t go unnoticed wherever u go.
Marry someone who has a gc or citizenship if you love USA that much, else juss leave
Nah don’t really find it attractive, my life in Mumbai was not bad at all.
If you can go to another country like UK or Canada I’d recommend that. The anxiety and nonsense in this country is a bit much.
Trust me don’t live here due to uncertainty over immigration. Been here on H1B since last 15 years and still under visa, won’t get another 10 years. The new ones have wait over 100 yrs. also you sacrifice social life. I would strongly recommend move to your motherland before it is late
I am not Indian so I can’t speak for the lifestyle there but aside from the anxiety that comes with the visa, I think it totally worth it. The money and the life here is pretty great.
True. I feel the same but then it’s always great to have a plan-B. I mean, you came here for MS, to get good education which you have and now have total of 3 years(minimum) to get the experience. Let’s say you’re then on h1b too, then that’s where the anxiety said as you said which is right. But why are you even thinking this as permanent? Honestly, for me I’ll always have a plan-B and not worry whatever happens. Just love in the moment and enjoy till it lasts. That’s my philosophy.
I’ve got a CS undergrad, MS in Management. Got some startup experience that I co founded but it wasn’t tech related, otherwise am pretty fresh. Been on the bench since I joined 3 months ago😓
I’d consider Australia as well. UK and Canada salaries are much lower
Australian girls are all super hot as well
Considering leaving US, once I pay off my student loan and my OPT ends.
What makes you stay here?
Am originally from Mumbai
Move. I'm from Mumbai and been here for 17 years. Still waiting for my green card. Just not worth it. You can do a lot with your education back home.
If you wish to stay here and make USA your home, hold on and hang tight, treat this as one hell of a rollercoaster ride. Save money, create a nice rainy day fund, obviously not at the expense of not enjoying/living your life here. You are still 24, make the most of your work experience, get the knowledge, work hard, enjoy. Live life, but also know the reality, be prepared, that this rollercoaster might hang up midway and throw you off. Don't be disappointed, there are ample opportunities back home, you will go back more confident and the life experiences in the USA will prepare you for even more worse problems in your life (don't worry, life is going to throw many easy and difficult challenges at you). More on life perspective, with our millennial generation, and the generation coming up after that, we are the generation never going to achieve a sense of "settling down" in one place, something that are parents enjoyed. We are a generation that's going to be travelling for work, moving on to brighter pastures. We will always be living in this uncertainty. So the point in short is, live your life here, work hard and enjoy it! :)
That was amazing, thank you!

I think people are in the US because it’s (at least before COVID-19) the best option there is.
Canada? No jobs
India? Recession since a year. Search for EY jobs in India. You’ll barely find any.
UK? Very little time to find a job. Very few tech jobs
Australia seems to be a viable option, but with the current economic situation, who knows.

Totally agree with C2! There is always something or the other wherever you go. Life is full of challenges, just keep sailing the boat, pass the storms one by one as you encounter them and make thoughtful navigations. Thousands of H1B folks waiting on their GC over a decade, they are not giving up, why should you? Overthinking and being way too futuristic only adds to the worry!
Moved to Cayman Islands, and I should say I wish I had made the decision earlier. The col is high, but my savings are higher now.
Sure! Feel free to directly message me!
OP: you are young and have time to decide your perm base. But be sure that more you grow in age it becomes difficult. Once you reach a age of family life if you don’t have a GC it’s difficult not only for you but for your kids too. Add to this visa issues and being constantly on edge because of some crazy EO. So, ya if I were you in 24 I would start looking outside USA like in Aus and on the side get atleast US 140 approved for GC so that once it becomes current in forseable future you can decide either to come back or continue where you are. I just got my Aus PR and I am planning a move in another 3 yrs given that I have a house to sell, husband’s job and various other factors. I don’t have kids yet but it’s tough. Good luck
I would move. The glamorous life with boats, a vocation house/cabin, and a baddie seems to be unobtainable as a foreigner in the United States. Not saying that’s the benchmark, but it was my dream of coming here.
Wow you are only just 24. I wish I was in this predicament when I was your age. Some people just don't know how lucky they are.
Moved to Sydney a few months back and I’m glad I did, cause shit seems to have hit the fan pretty quick since
P1: just got my PR. You can dm me
