24. Just found out the cause of my chronic serious back pain is a bulging disc. Doc said these don’t go away and can only be “managed”. Should I just stop thinking about PE as an exit option?

Why are you grinding at Bain if you only aspire to teach physical education at your local high school???

This is such a Bain post it's crazy

We’re using our back as a pole when it was designed to be a clothesline. Start walking on all fours, or be thankful for every second your back doesn’t hurt. String 60 of those seconds together, and you’ve got one wonderful minute.

Hopefully I can give a slightly more useful perspective… I have significant back problems from herniated discs. They often ebb and flow to some extent. There are tons of potential pain management options out there. It varies by person - we just don’t understand it well enough to point each person down the exact right path. A few things to try. Before any of this - get a good chair and standing by desk setup so you can vary your positions. 1) Physical therapy. I’ve found traditional physical therapy useless, but it works for some 2) McKenzie method physical therapy. This one has been helpful for me on the margins encourage reading “treat your own back” (read it, don’t just skip to the exercises), and finding a McKenzie-certified PT person 3) Epidural steroid injections. These have been by far the most powerful treatment for me. I was literally couch-bound for three weeks (got up once a day for the bathroom, otherwise barely moved), got these and was 50% better 48 hours later (note - I had no improvement in the first 36 hours - be patient) 4) Acupuncture. Never worked for me, not a lot of scientific backing, but also very low downside risk and Bain insurance covers it. 5) chiropractic. I don’t like the more invasive adjustment-based chiropractors, makes me nervous and not enough evidence for me to try it, but some swear by it. A minimal invasive chiropractor with a McKenzie cert might be good though 6) prescription painkillers. These were useless for me when I was at my worst, but now I’m generally ok, and these help tamp things down if they start up a bit (Advil, allele, Tylenol May help too) 7) leg length adjustment. This one is out of favor in the medical world, but I found it useful. I’ve got about a 1.25 cm difference in my leg lengths. I found that correcting that with shoe inserts was quite helpful. 8) posture correction. This is next on my list - getting one of those devices that buzz whenever you slump over. 9) surgery. Avoid if at all possible… Honestly, I found it quite hard to get a good list of these things via my GP or even the specialists. Also, if you need some medical Lea

This is a great list. My PT has been great in helping me manage. I’ve been working to build strength overall but particularly my glutes. It’s helped a ton.

My wife has one, sees a great chiropractor for it and very rarely has any pain anymore. So a little maintenance is all that's needed for her management, she's still very physically active.

Honestly try getting a pull up bar and hanging on it a few minutes a day. It's a good way to relieve back pain

What city, you need a really great chiro, and a new stretch, strengthen routine

Find a great chiropractor + seriously reassess your desk ergonomics & posture. Reach out to your HR team to see what ergonomic equipment Bain can buy for you.

+1 on ergo. Invest in a really nice office chair (steel case, HM, etc). Learn good stretches and core exercises from a PT. Cant fix client chair and airplane seats, but this will do wonders.

I highly recommend getting professional advice and then make sure you have a daily routine in place to train/keep stuff flexible, I do my exercises every morning for about 1.5years now, I still hate them, but It works perfectly, hardly any pain anymore, so that's what keeps me going.

I bought an inversion table and it’s helped me significantly. Low cost method for some treatment

Forgot to finish the last sentence… medical leave to get things in order (depending on the severity). In a WFH world I managed to work through everything, but only because I was on a very light internal case for the worst acute phase

like

Careful of prescription pain meds and surgery….know lots of people who end up as pain pill addicts with the same level of back pain as before! Try pt, light exercise, and other lifestyle changes first!!

Would it be a good move to a mid size tech company for 20% rise in base comp and stock options when the role is similar to what you have been doing. For added context recently got promoted so wouldn’t probably see as much base bump as I saw this year in the next cycle.
