25 year old, single in NYC. Am trying to get a sense of my own spending.

Not including rent.

I spend like 1200$ a month on my card. Is it too much? Is it average?

During COVID time, I spent like $600 - $800 per month excluding rent. I find myself only spend on grocery delivery and occasional food delivery. Oh I also purchased an espresso machine, that month was over $1500.
Before COVID, I spent way too much on lunch, dinner, and coffee in midtown (where I work).

23 single, I spend minimum that on the card per month. Honestly nobody is really in the city to save money

That is totally untrue. The people who think that way are the ones who burn out and have to leave.

What are you guys spending this money on?

like

Food, drinks and experiences. I have a nice nest egg saved for when I want to move out of the city and buy a house, so not focused on saving as much right now, just living my best life

Thats nothing. Wait till you develop a coke habit..then budgets can really skyrocket

Also is the 50% on needs, 30% on wants and 20% on savings, a good rule to follow?

I’m not so sure. What is that $600 being spent on? If it’s healthcare, utilities, and groceries, then I can see it - but if not, seems a bit high? I usually spend $800 a month or so! 26F.

Spent $400 a month on discretionary things (eating and drinking out) and maybe $200 on groceries when I was 23-24, on average (not including trips and all). $600 on discretionary and $120 on groceries in months where I ate out more. I saved 30-50% of my take-home pay when I was 23-24, depending on loans and salary and all. After a big pay raise, it became a lot more proportionally since I was spending probably the same amount. But I LOVE to cook and did more dinner parties in than nights out.

So much of this depends on your income and savings goals though.

I put about $2000 on my card every month (pay it off each month of course). Just as long as you’re still saving each month I think it’s fine - I do 20% of my income to savings which seems like a good goal to still enjoy life

Has anyone done earthquake retrofitting for a house NEWER than 1980? I know it’s a must-do for houses OLDER than 1980. But my house was built in 1988, so it’s not required.

Several contractors provided estimates, in the $40k-$50k range, which seems like a lot of $$$.

Apparently our house has bolts but not enough and not the right kind, plus it needs joist blocking and shear paneling. All to meet codes put in place after our house was built.

Just curious if others have done this.

Hi all!

Seeking advice on job titles.

I'm looking for roles that have aspects of event strategy & marketing. I have experience doing both and would like to continue on that path but I struggle with what titles to look for. Company suggestions are appreciated as well! Is there a role out there that would allow me to work with clients and plan their event/marketing strategy?
