I took a three-month break at the age of 28 to do a cross country road trip camping out at America’s national parks. If I were to take a break now at the age of 43, I’d probably take 6 months off. Maybe longer.
I took a leave. My employer was totally cool with it.
I was burnt out and took a “mental health” leave. Was able to use short-term disability for 3 months (I think the max is 6 months) fully paid with benefits. Ended up returning to work and quitting.
Your health is more important than your wealth. Ask Father Time. Take time off away from the digital world and reset but ensure you’re moving not ideal looking at blue light all day still. Being outside viewing landscapes but say hiking to a destination (goal) does wonders on your brain and personal discovery / reset. A lot of power in the disconnect. Depending on time short of long time off the US trails (AT, NCT or PCT are great or The Camio in Europe if covid gets squashed soon.
B-school!
Spending 200k, then having a job with a worst WLB to pay it off is not my idea of FI
I think you are doing great! . Money is great but it doesnt really give you purpose in and of itself. Figure out what's important to you and take some time off exploring that.
From a 35 year old, just do it man. I really regret not taking a break in my late 20s because I was so worried about money but I should have done it regardless for my mental health.
29 & had also been considering a mid-career break pre-pandemic. I put those plans on hold because, when I take a gap, I want to be able to DO something (travel, meet new people, etc. ). That said, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to take a break now if you feel you can utilize the time the way you want!
Yes! I took a break (quit) at 26 for almost a year, did a lot of travel, spent time with family including my grandmother who passed away in that timeframe, met new people, and got the mental clarity to end an unhealthy relationship. I had saved everything to that point and when not traveling worked hard to eat meals at home, not shop unnecessarily, etc. I was able to get a job when I was ready to go back in a fairly short time and to keep on FI path, I’ve saved/invested entirely of my bonus each year since
Business school is a nice reset, although very expensive
With a scholarship!!! Never go to grad school without a scholarship!!!
Definitely take a break. You shouldn't suffer for cash just so you can spend it in old age. You can also put everything in storage and just get in some adventure before coming back and picking things up
