25m. Consulting for 3 years. I got into a top 10 mba program for the fall, so normally a no brainer. With covid I’m not sure. Is there any benefit to an mba if it’s all online? Firm isn’t paying (and haven’t told them - I’m at a boutique so I’d have to quit) and no indication it’s it’s online or not. Very anxious about having to decide. What are others thinking?

Best time to do MBA in a crap economy IMO

likesmarthelpful

On the flip side MBA may not be very good ROI anymore. Most are foregoing it

like

This person is a hater. If you get into a top 10 MBA school, go!
It will definitely be a ROI, just from the networking alone.

It does seems a bit odd that 2 yrs of doing drugs with old money dudes named Tate is worth of a 40% salary bump

likefunny

OP I’m in the exact same boat as you but I’m planning on going. Classes are not going to be online in the fall. Will we wear masks, social distance ourselves and have pretty much no school events? Probably. But I think Zoom classes ain’t gonna happen and it’s not worth losing an MBA from an M7 just bc you can’t party as hard the first 6 months

like

the second year tho. Going to be nice

like

Wait it out and see if your school let’s people defer. If the entire class basically ends up deferring I’m going to do the same. Otherwise I’ll probably go this fall even if it’s online.

like

Yes, which is exactly why I’m saying wait it out and see if other schools take the same approach

like

Applications for fall 2021 are going to be insane. If you can’t defer I’d go now.

Isn't MBA specifically on the decline though? Employers are not seeing it as value add to their company compared to relevant experience?

like

Really depends on the school

like

It won’t be the same social experience initially but you should still be able to get the same career boost, and that is fundamentally the main reason to get an MBA. I agree that this is a great time to be out of the job market and when you’re recruiting for internships and your next role in 1-2 years, things should be looking up. It does depend on the school and what you are aiming to achieve professionally overall.

like

The only value MBAs have is in the network you're going to build. Difficult to do that online. Id defer to 2021 if you can

like

Which school?

I have had the same convo with executives who have their. For one, the MBA degree won’t say if it was online or not, you don’t have to say it was online in your resume. Two: If your aspirations are to be in the C-Suite or upper management, then you need an MBA. Make the choice for you. If you gotten into a top 10 program big the crap out of them for scholarships and grant/fellowship programs!

Fairly certain our NA CEO haa gotten pretty far with 'only' a BSIE from GT.

Congrats op. What score?

Why don’t you just put on your big boy pants and ask them if it’s online or not before you start stressing

Lol duh. Obviously no school is going to make that decision until the absolute last minute

like

If it's a Top 10 MBA school, you're right, is a no brainier. Go! It's worth it.
Not worth it to go into debt for a lesser known online school.

What kind of Masters program would you recommend for someone hoping to make it into a senior leadership/executive role in Comms/PR? I have over 6 yrs of experience in Comms in public/private sector. However, I haven't had any formal education in Comms/Journalism which I have felt always put me at a disadvantage. My question is, is there an advantage of doing a Masters to improve my chances of getting into a leadership role? If so, would an MBA be better than a Masters in PR/Comms?

Hi! I have worked in management roles in tech, mainly in analytics, for approximately 10 years. My TC has fluctuated (currently around 135K CAD), but it seems like it's relatively easy to breach the 100K bar, but hard to breach the 150K bar. I now work at the CBC, but I have worked in the private sector too. What is the most realistic way to move to 200K? 1) Continue moving the ladder to a VP position, 2) Switch to Pre-Sale, 3) Switch to Consulting, 4) Work from a U.S. company from Canada.
