As far as VC goes, I grinded. Most growth equity shops (TA, Summit, Norwest, NEA, etc.) will consider MBB / and maybe EYP, OW. Other than that, this area of the world is dominated by IB. I was in a unique situation where I was basically obsessed with venture and did a few extracurriculars that made it known like attending events, writing thesis, playing in a vc founder basketball game, etc. Additionally, I worked at a relatively high profile startup which gave me some clout when it came to interviewing. In terms of this specific role, I reached out to them before they were investing and wanted to learn more. I think if you're interested in the space, you should figure out what you're optimizing for. Is it pay? Prestige? a cool job? Early-stage VC (seed-B) is really akin to an SDR at a tech co. It's much less financial / business analysis, more about what drives these people, is this a good market, do they have a solid team, is their product/story compelling? As a jr investor, you're likely to either work directly under a partner and help evaluate deals (at good shops), or sent out to turn over every rock in the world (source deals) Growth stage VC (series B+) is financial engineering + Sales. You are hunting for undervalued assets with high growth trajectory. usually, this means companies growing 100%+ YoY, revenue > $10M+ in a specific area, usually enterprise software. A junior person in this role will be either 1) 'smiling and dialing' aka, cold calling founders or 2) executing transactions (more similar to an IB role). Growth is usually tricky because modeling out scenarios could be really challenging especially when software businesses have multiple growth levers
