I can’t speak to work clothing, because thats highly industry-dependent. But, NYC is a lot more casual than it used to be.
Get yourself some nice basics from a place like Buck Mason, some nice jeans from Levi’s, a clean pair of nice sneakers, a pair of nice leather shoes/dress boots and youre good to go.
Avoid any suede shoes or any expensive white clothes… theyll get dirty very very fast.
Also, make sure any shoes you get are comfy. Youll be walking more than youre used to.
It’s so so subjective, but you can’t go wrong in nyc with a chukka boot: https://www.macys.com/shop/product/johnston-murphy-copeland-chukka-boots?ID=2406761&CategoryID=65&isDlp=true&isDlp=true
Or a dress boot: https://www.macys.com/shop/product/anthony-veer-mens-grant-wingtip-leather-dress-boot?ID=12661267&CategoryID=65&isDlp=true&isDlp=true
I buy my shirts from uniqlo and only wear adidas tiro track pants. Idk if you want to look like a bum everyday outside of work, but I’m a bum everyday outside of work

What's your personal style, what do you like? Following the herd to blend in isn't ideal, in NYC you can get away with having a fun wardrobe.
Lululemon pants (ABC!!)

Where do you work? 2022 NYC is pretty much business casual if you're coming into the office. Don't look like a slob, but be comfortable.
Shirts - spend some money and go custom. Plenty of places that do made-to-measure shirts. You'll never buy off-the-rack once you have a few custom shirts.
Pants - Lululemon Commission pants are the way to go. They look dressy but are insanely comfortable.
As far as watches, across the board, it's inevitably smart watches. I have some very nice watches, and stopped wearing them in favor of an Apple Watch. Certainly none of the 27 yr olds I work with could tell the difference between a Patek, Rolex, Omega or Breitling. They're all wearing an Apple Watch.
Ultimately though, definitely do what makes you happy. If watches are your thing, own it.
For me, if I was looking to spend a few thousand on upgrading my overall "look" for NYC, I would say custom shirts and a salon haircut go much further than pants, shoes or jewelry (at least for men). My friend bought a Rolex Milgauss as his "I made it" watch a few years back - something he always wanted. Wore it regularly. 5 yrs later, he still has the watch but he's wearing an Apple Watch these days.
Lived here for 20 yrs. I've been complimented on my watches about 10 times. Shoes never. Pants never. Shirts... surprisingly regularly. Not sure why that is, but it continues to work for me, so I'm sticking with that strategy!
Banana republic. It fits a couple body types well and has a range of the new business casual to more traditional business casual. Not cheap but won’t break the bank
