2nd week on the job. Still not staffed, any advice on who/how (partner, manager etc.) to get myself off the bench? These 'layoff' posts are scaring me!

Don't be scared homie. Focus on networking. Learning what folks are working on. Ask if they need help. Just get into the mix of things, speak up. Make a good first impression.

I thought you were safe after a year but I was laid off in a year. So like no ones safe. 🙄

You're reasonably safe new on the job when it comes to chargeability. After a year its anyone's guess, and probably unrelated (or less) to chargeability

What kind of work do you do? What staff level are you?

Yea I wouldn't worry too much about it when your brand new. Take time to try and network as well as learning to ropes at the firm (including how various internal processes and stuff work - it is easier to figure that stuff out now than when in the middle of a project).

There are things you can and cannot control. Focus on what you can control - make yourself visible, be known as a proactive person who wants to be productive and is willing to learn and take on challenges, participate in firm events, and grow your network, both in and out of your core area. Stay positive - it's contagious and people will remember you for it.

2 weeks is no time at all. Take a breath

Enjoy the time on the bench and do all of the required training and make a point to go in to the office and network with people. Once you're on a project you will not have time to do any of it.

@janedoe, I'm a senior associate, strategy consulting

2 weeks?! Chillax...

Seriously? Chill ... you will miss this time when it's all gone. I could do anything for 2-3 weeks on the bench

A friend of mine from a top tier consulting firm was counseled out. Do you consider it ethical that his career counselor is intentially spreading the information to his colleagues and to other consultants from other companies in the project? What can he do about it? Specially that he considers the potential layoff is purely based on the current situation (chargeability was low) and not on his performance (they said that his contribution to BD during his bench time was low)?

Hi IBM sharks 😊

So I joined IBM in May 2022 and was on bench for 5.5 months since then.I will be allocated to a project next week. Also my probation got confirmed a week back.

I have following queries-
1)With me joining a project so late, can I expect a Variable Pay in March 2023?
2)The manager told me I have flexibility to choose 2-11 shift or work in morning as everyone is flexible here. What must I do officially to get that monthly shift allowance?

Any inputs r highly appreciated guys 😊

I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

Hey guys ,
I was a fresher when i joined wipro
My manager has given me rating 1 in confirmatory appraisal on may 18 may which happened after completion of 1 year at wipro.
I raised the issue of rating with my manager immediately , he convinced me not to worry , ratings are already submitted , I asked him to resubmit cause i don't deserve rating 1
So he said he will look if that is possible but didn't changed .Now after 3 months they are pressurizing me to put a resignation, what should i do?

Does anyone regret joining a boutique consulting firm? I signed with a startup out of college (spring 2020) whose founding partners were all partners/Sr leaders at a few T2s. Our firm is super small (dozen FTEs) but does really good work (we charge premium rates and work super cool projects). I’m just having second thoughts as exit opportunities aren’t as prevalent as I thought, the pay/benefits don’t match industry/risk of joint a startup, and I’m not getting the network of a Big4 or MBB

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
