2nd year associate here. Has anyone made a jump from a boutique firm to big law? I found out that I’m a front runner for a gig with an Amlaw 100. I never thought I’d have this chance having graduated from an unranked law school and still being so junior. Even though the firm asked if I’d be willing to start as a 1st year given my lack of litigation experience, it’s still a monumental upgrade/ jump. I’m nervous about the culture shock and whether I’ll cut it. Could really use some advice!

Yes, people have made the jump. Good for you. Go for it. They wouldn’t hire you if they didn’t think you were capable.

I say go for it. 99% of the job is attitude and availability. The rest you will learn as you go. Sounds super exciting, good luck.

I also made the jump. It’s definitely a culture shift, but I don’t regret leaving the boutique. Also, one year lost isn’t that bad since you’re a second year and have a long pathway to partnership anyway. I will say, you may find that you lose a lot of responsibility in comparison to a smaller firm. Sometimes that’s good; sometimes that’s bad. No position will be perfect, so if you get a good vibe, I say take it and be ready to take your lumps for some really great opportunities and development

I did, and it’s been great so far. I’m sure it wouldn’t have been if I went to any Am100 but the one I landed at has been really positive. FWIW, I lateraled as a third year and did not have to take a year cut (though other comparable firms I had offers from were asking me to).

Met with a CCO for a role on a notoriously “challenging” account. Thirty minute Zoom, nothing in-depth. A few days later the recruiter emails like “Great news. We’ve talked to many people but they’d like to make an offer to you!” I’m thinking to myself, it was a 30 minute call, I’ve never met my direct manager, potential partner(s), etc...So these guys are just desperate to fill this role, right?
