2nd year in and having gone straight from undergrad to banking, cant imagine what it feels like to have a “normal job” (i.e. 9-5, weekend free, no work on vacation, can unplug completely off work)

9-5 job sounds miserable. Love working 7 days a week. Studying materials on weekends at my own leisure, etc. being productive > going out and wasting time

like

He means working as in studying stuff on your own time. Not on some book

like

You’re not unique in that sense. But think about how chill every subsequent job will be after banking

like

@BX1 that’s also the beauty of the buyside vs. banking, your job is less BS. I’d be happy to work 7 days a week if I was evaluating investments and executing instead of spending a significant amount of time pitching and making pie charts. When you add value (and feel that your work is meaningful), work is a lot less miserable. It’s why startup execs are happy to let their jobs consume their lives.

Awesome response, BX. What do you study on the weekends?

This is more of a sanity check, but ending the billable year at around 2550 is absurdly high, right? I have two weeks to go and am easily going to hit 50 hours by then…I know this year has been bad for everyone (I’m in a rising 6th year in a finance group), but I feel like I’ve been extra crushed with work (And I’ve been removed off 3 matters earlier this year, due to lack of time). For what it’s worth, I was in 2800+ pace until I took a vacation in late August….

I started last October as a junior (moved over after 3 years in B4 accounting). Have worked nearly every day since then except for the occasional Sunday when I decided to blow off work I probably should have been doing. I desperately need a vacation, but have no clue what that even looks like with Covid, WFH, and Biglaw life in general. It also feels super hard to take a break because it seems like no one in my group ever does. Not sure whether I'm posting to gripe or seeking advice...

I've been working for a regional public accounting firm since last Summer. It's a small office and I don't really fit in. The accounting software(s) is also ancient and slow here(circa 2003). I quickly applied for a position at a Big 4 and surprisingly was quickly offered a job. The training here has been haphazard and even managers barely know how to use the software. My main concern is the awkwardness from leaving after such a short time but the commute is an hour shorter to the big 4 firm.
