In terms of timing, probably get out sooner rather than later so you don’t get so used to the higher salary
The checks keep going up!! It’s those yearly increases that really get you firmly enmeshed in the golden handcuffs.

Could you work at your alma mater? Our school’s career center seemed to employ mostly alums that had taken all sorts of paths since they graduated (not super prestigious, just random)
1. Does your firm have career counselors? They could help you with your external search. 2. Check our your alma mater and see if they have positions available in their career counseling office or admissions office. 3. Check NALP careers. Law schools also post job postings here usually for their career counseling office. You can filter by location. Good luck!
Higheredjobs.com and LinkedIn have jobs postings. Both will allow you to set up a job search card that will notify you if a matching job pops-up. You can also do the same thing with individual educational institutions.
My suggestions are this: first, don't wait (don't transition) and just start applying for jobs in that arena. Life is way too short to stay in a job you have instead of finding one you want. Second, ask somebody in your alma mater's (or any law school really) admissions or career advising for a virtual coffee meeting and pick their brain about how they got their job, best practices for applying, and most importantly about themselves (people love to talk about themselves). You may find that by doing this you not only get more information, but you may have an advocate out there for you when a job inevitably opens up.
