3 yr post undergrad currently at 100k base. Offer from industry with cash comp of 175k but would derail b school plans and would have lower earning potential in the long term. Advice from the fish?

Take the money. B School doesn’t necessarily mean higher earnings either. There is a big opportunity cost in your case.

Take this job for 18-30 months before going to b-school (if you still go) You’ll have much much better perspective and will gain more from the MBA experience

like

That's a wage higher than the average of any b school. For context, HBS is like 150k I think.

like

150k is more the base, not all in

like

175k 3 years out of school? This shouldn’t even be a question...take the job and do bschool after a few years if you still feel the desire.

like

What industry and role? Curious

like

You can hit 140-180 if you do stuff like Sales Engineering in SF/tech.

If I’m could defer, pocket the extra $75k and put towards b school if you then still want to go.

like

Exactly 👆

Go for Bschool if you’re already in / think you have a chance at a top school. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. Also many senior industry positions (director and above) strongly prefer MBAs for external hires.

like

Ya, was in a similar boat as you. Decided to nix the idea of B school, and take the job. You’re going to make more than 90% of your would be classmates will AFTER business school and also save ~300k in debt. Also, if they’re bringing you in at that salary with only 3 years of experience. It’s very likely they are envisioning you take on bigger, more expanded roles in the future.

like

Business school will always be there. That job won’t

What type of job in industry?

It’s hard to say without more information. It’s unlikely a 175k industry position will hurt your B-School app. A note in B-School: it really depends on your goals. If it is to maximize earnings B-School may or may not do that for you. If you want to place yourself in the best position for an exec role in the future, particularly for some industry jobs, it’s definitely worth it.

What role offers 175k for 3 years of exp? Curious for my own search plz

@All... does existing at a certain comp to industry out of consulting limit you to a certain salary growth trajectory? E.G. it’s steeper in consulting but once you exit, expect ~5% jumps afterwards not ~25%. If so, how do you counteract this if at all?
