30 y/o, married, 1 kid on the way. Have about $250k cash sitting in my checking account and finally deciding to invest (already doing maximum retirement contributions and will do 529 when kid is born, so this would be in a taxable brokerage account). I have no idea where to start. I see a bunch of references to vanguard funds, etc. (mostly VTI and VOO), but wondering if folks have other recommendations. Really don’t want to pay an advisor, but I might if I can’t get comfortable doing it myself.

Honestly VTI (or FSKAX from Fidelity) is the simplest way to get into the stock market without having to know too much. It’s intended to track the entire stock market and can basically be a “set it and forget it” investment.

like

Ah yes, you’re right. I was able to pull it up. Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.

like

Put the majority into VTI. You can add VXUS if you want international exposure.

like

This is what I do with ITOT and IXUS. My entire brokerage account is those funds.

You can start the 529 now. Put it under your name, then transfer the account to your child when he/she is born.

like

Jack Bogle (of Vanguard) 3 fund approach.

70% US market (VOO etc)
15% international market (VEU etc)
15% bond market (I sub this for real estate VNQ)

Understand ‘why’ people are recommending the index funds, then make your decision.

Living in Van. Previously lived in Toronto. Obviously rent prices are high as is cost of living. Generally go out and spend more often living in a city. Boyfriend and I on good salary but not saving much due to the above. Before we move home to our own country, we’d love to spend a year close to Vancouver where rent is cheaper, temptation is less, to save. A commute to Vancouver 1-2 times a month needs to be possible (his job). That can be a flight if it’s not crazy. Thoughts? Recommendations?

First time Dad and my 15 month old keeps running up the stairs at my in-laws place and they keep encouraging it. Stairs are almost 10 inches high with nothing underneath and I’m worried that he might slip and fall in between the stairs. My FIL is a bit of a know-it-all and keeps insisting it’s safe and I don’t agree. What do I do? Don’t want to fight the entire house full of people about this and kid enjoys it too much and cries a lot if I/we prevent him from climbing
