I joined consulting for the breadth and client exposure and because I love to research and solve problems... The reality is I'm often placed on projects as a project manager because I don't 'fit anywhere better' like someone who's a service designer, UX researcher, enterprise architect etc.... I'm really trying to take my career to the next level and become someone who's known for a strength /experience in an area... Just don't know where to dive deeper... Anyone had a similar experience? What did you do about it? What advice would you give? Or even some valuable certifications that can help with pivoting to a more specialized role? Thank you!
I don’t know anything about consulting but it sounds like you need to figure out what you would specialize in. But maybe you don’t need to. Do a SWOT analysis of yourself. Do an audit of your career: make a list of all the things you’ve done in all your jobs and what you liked and didn’t like about them. Try to look for patterns. Think about the times when you felt best about your work and life. Talk to people in your field, especially those who have left. Maybe talk to a recruiter? I work in Pharma but a recruiter recently reached out to me about a CS role for a finance brand because if I’m comfortable with Pharma regulations, I can probably deal with financial regulations. I never would have thought of that as an option. There might be some affinities you’re not seeing. Also it could just be that your company isn’t able to see or make room for your best self. Maybe start interviewing elsewhere?
What do you want? What does “I want to take my career to the next level” mean for you?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I don’t believe just being willing to have the conversation is enough. If businesses truly cared for the career goals of their employees they would do more to help with that. They would open up their networks, they would help you with looking outside the company for opportunities if they couldn’t make it happen, they would create a position for you, etc. Unfortunately, that isn’t happening. There are a few companies that do do those things and it should happen more often. I will keep fighting for that change.
Great question OP.... I'm in the same boat!
Yeah.. Hopefully I get some responses/advice on this
