32F, recently diagnosed, currently writing a doctoral dissertation and will be joining consulting in . Had doubts about taking medication. But I first had a 10 mg Adderall yesterday and worked on my dissertation for 17 hours.

I've been dragging writing this dissertation FOREVER (data collected back in 2018). In the past 5 years I’ve been a doctoral student , I have never focused on writing for more than 3 hours a day. I think I can finish this eventually.

Welcome to the Fam, OP.

I’m 29 and been taking it since I was 13. Here are some things I had to learn the hard way:

- watch your blood pressure and exercise to prevent cardiovascular damage.

-hydrate hydrate hydrate

- In the future, it may be tempting to take more adderall or an extra dose occasionally when you’ve had an “off day” but avoid doing so.
This is because Adderall has a 8 hour half life. An additional dose in one day will increase the total adderall in your body and increase the half life clock. Adderall toxicity is not fun. So take doses as recommended.

My best friend got diagnosed after struggling like hell with her genetics PhD for 4 years. Afterwards she soared through the finish line in 18 months and did amazingly. She wasn’t even prescribed stimulant Rx’s for part of that period. It just helped SO MUCH to finally have the diagnosis and have treatment.

She’s basically my sister since we were little… watching her journey unfold made me realize I myself had ADHD! I was always in consulting and completely different field than her… but hearing about all the testing and diagnostics and stuff she went through was a good mirror for me.

Welcome to the late diagnosis club 💁🏻‍♀️ My unsolicited advice — there’s often an emotional roller coaster that comes with late diagnosis. Initial elation / surprise “it’s so easy now!” “I’ve been living life on hard mode” “oh! that’s why I __________ when I was younger”

That can sometimes fade to frustration / mourning / even anger about “what could have been” “hey… I did this well living on hard mode… what if someone had taken time to see me and helped me early on…”. “People used to give me a hard time or make me feel bad for _______, but now I know that was because I had ADHD, not because I was [negative value judgement]”. This can be really tough and be a lot to work through emotionally. Almost everyone I personally know who went through later in life diagnosis experienced this emotional dip within the first year. Additionally, you will likely now be much more aware of ADHD symptoms and habits you have… and over time realize that the meds didn’t fix them. That can also lead to frustration.

For me personally, that’s when I added a PsyD therapist who specializes on ADHD in working professionals. It helped immensely to work through my past feelings and also to help fix the things meds didn’t fix alone. If you find yourself on a similar journey over the next year, highly recommend adding talk therapy to your medication regimen!

Sending you good vibes and a reminder to always stay hydrated 😉✨

Welcome to amphetamines. You sound like everyone else after they discover speed. Be careful. Goodluck on your journey

Be careful is key here for sure. No one should be productive for 17 hrs. I’m now off of adderall after 10 yrs. It was so difficult to get off. Been off like 4 months now and finally starting to see the light again.

Hello fellow fishes!

Im trying to understand if I have add/adhd and the internet research is pointing towards a yes.

Im still a masters student and worked a bit (which was a disaster due to excel mistakes and inattentiveness) and have been a struggling inattentive and non focused student since ever..

Would you have any recommendations to better evaluate add/adhd or manage it at this point of time?

Ofc I am going to get professional help in due course but just wanted to know from you all.
