4th year considering switching from big law to in-house. What is the expected pay cut? Is the decrease worth it? How hard is it to get back into to big law a few years down the line? Am I too junior?

Pay cut depends on size of company and market. I’m in DC you’d be looking at 125,000-140,000 at my company with your level of experience. As for being too junior it really depends on what kind of in-house role you are looking for.

Yea I think this generally sums it up.

Pay depends on market you’re in. I bet you could pull at least $170 in the big markets. Don’t forget 401k matching, stock packages, better benefits etc. Also, I’ve seen people go from in house back to big law very easily - seeing the ins and outs of how a company operates is invaluable to being a strong outside counsel.

You can get at least $200K in DC. Of course, it also depends on where you coming from and where you headed. Your practice may influence it too. Still thinks it’s achievable, unless there’s an unfavorable economic downturn.

Where? I’m in house in DC and that has not been my experience. GC’s are pulling that in and maybe senior counsel although here they are well under 200k but I haven’t seen any associate (4-7 yr) positions that high. Genuinely curious, I’m open to a change if you know of places offering this much.

Im in SV, private company tech, 2016 grad making 200K plus bonus plus stock options. Im not that far behind my biglaw peers. And my quality of life is waaaaaaaay better. It's pretty easy to get back into biglaw as a midlevel bc all firms need midlevels....but you wont want to.

I just received an offer for a job I am very excited about. Base is within reasonable range and I will likely go back and ask for a bit more there. My question is: are those percentages typically negotiated or set based on position?

Thoughts on when a contract is silent as to whether liability is uncapped? We typically cap liability at contract price, but this particular heavyweight co. wants TCs accepted as is. Their terms disclaim consequential damages but there’s no language at all about whether it’s capped or uncapped. If a K is silent as to this, is it implied that both parties have agreed to uncapped? Or does it go to reasonableness standard?

What is the in-house interview timeline these days?
