Better option is to go to your firm and ask them if they will give you unpaid leave for a sabbatical. Tell them you need a break but you like the firm and want to come back. I know someone who did this for 9-12 mos. granted much more senior than you. Worst case they say no and you are in same boat.

Granted, I'm not an experienced partner. But I am on our recruiting committee. ....
Slim.
General impression, in my experience, is that if you need an "eat, pray, love" time traveling around the world, you should have done that in undergrad. Otherwise, you wait until you're an established partner to do that. Not saying I agree that there should be no route back in once you've left for some time--just that that's my impression.

We (V25) hired someone like this. USCA clerk then Biglaw 3 years. Traveled 18 months. Then we hired him. We docked 2 years seniority. He has since made partner. So it’s possible. But he has extremely good academics, extremely strong judicial recommendation, and we were desperate for someone at his level and needed fast start outside normal hiring window. And his performance since three has been unreal. He also had a good explanation for gap and compelling story about wanting to make partner. So a lot of things aligned for him.

like

He wasn’t being trained or receiving opportunities to develop skill at trying complex commercial cases for a living, which he aspired to do, which rang true because of where he had worked, and with whom. So he quit and traveled to try to find a different ambition. When he returned he had the same goal, when he (correctly) thought he could achieve with is. “Wanting to live a little” probably wouldn’t give off the same shine.

Some big firms will let you take unpaid year off. That may be the easier option. Worth asking

Slim. It would have been better if you’d done it before starting. I’d look at that resume and assume that the person couldn’t handle big law demands and therefore the sabbatical. What’s to say that’s changed? I probably wouldn’t look twice unless there was something that stood out (expertise in a high demand area or big city experience moving to a smaller market.

Have you thought about approaching your firm and asking if it’s an option for you to take a sabbatical and come back? I know we’ve done it a few times for truly superstar associates. I don’t think it was a full year, but it was several months.

All these weddings are blowing my mind and budget. I've had 5 weddings so far this year with several more to go by EoY. On top of that I've been asked to be in a lot of them which adds additional time commitment and cost. The cost of a bachelor party + shitty men's warehouse suit rental + travel and airbnb for the weekend + couple hundred bucks for wedding gift means I'm blowing tons of money for these weddings but I feel bad to say no.
