Knowledge is power. Some companies and managers try to prevent people from sharing comp because they know there are some comp inconsistencies. That’s not right. Equity and salary transparency will be the wave of the future. If your boss wants to “punish” people for disclosing their own comp that speaks volumes and would be a bigger red flag. You cannot intimidate your employees.

In 2022 this shouldn’t be a thing anymore. Salary scale and transparency should be available to everyone instead of secrecy headaches 😅this can also give the ability for those to aspire to more if they see the worth as salary scale reflect skills, experience, education and group of specialization. You wouldn’t pay a CSR role the same as engineer. This will help people understand better and why?
This is why I wish more states would pass laws about making salaries public info. When people start talking about it, there are always some that end up mad and demanding raises. If salaries weren't gatekept, maybe we could avoid this.
It should not be kept a secret. Disclosing your salary is not illegal. I think you need to make them understand that salaries are based on several factors like job description, yoe, skills and position.
…And marketplace conditions at time of hire!
UGG. Comparison is the thief of joy.
We had this happening at our organization, too, recently.
The people that are paid the least get mad because other people are paid more. The people that are paid more are mad because they think they should be paid much more than the people that are paid the least.
I think punishing anyone for discussing this information ultimately just makes the employer look bad. People expect transparency.
What’s needed is an open and honest discussion with each annoyed person about why they are compensated the way that they are. Sometimes this means having uncomfortable conversations, but that’s what leadership is all about, right? I hope there aren’t major flaws in the compensation system that need addressing.
Really feel for you. Not fun!
This is definitely a hard topic, especially because salaries can vary for so many different reasons. Definitely agree with the comment above about discussing why employees are paid their salaries. I've experience some complaints that have been justified, and some that have not been.
Have you advised your boss that is illegal? Don't let him/her dig you and your company into a deeper hole.
Yeah seriously, don't make this worse. I would come up with some reasonings for the higher salaries (e.g., experience, contributions, impact) OR you just gotta raise everyone if there's literally no way to justify the discrepancies...and maybe revisit the comp structure lol
As if punishment would turn things around. Why don't your boss just justify their salaries if they really don't deserve a raise.
