Have 16 years combined active and reserve however, only 10 sat reserve years. O3E.
As you may know, it isn't actually "1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year", and the commitment has a cost with time, energy, risk etc. (USMC at least)
Decided that having the officer experience was enough, and my civilian life is more valuable.
In your case, OP, you may find some alternate jobs to throw into the mix that allow you more flexibility for a year or 2. I recommend that if you can ride it out and have some fun with it, the benefits are good so def go for it!
Army - Signal ... well my kid has a medical issue so for now I will stay in for the healthcare welfare. I would love to stick it out for 20 but my unit is probably deploying in the next year or 2 so who knows...
My wife stays home but started to go INSANE watching 2 kids all day for 20-ish days/month between my consulting travel and drill weekends.
We ended up getting an Au Pair (foreign live-in nanny) which has been a miracle. If you want to stay in with little kids you must have a rock solid support system for the wife.
I wanted to join the guard after active duty and even had the opportunity to get back on an SF Dive team as the Team Leader but I turned it down. I left the Army to get my MBA and live the best civilian life I could. I knew I would fall back into what I was comfortable with if I did the Army thing again- I would have stayed full time if I wanted to be an Army guy. So because of that, I left and never looked back.
KPMG2 - Yea probably good idea - I'm starting my MBA next year (Executive). But being that I am so close to retirement, I know 30 years from now I would be kicking myself. 5 years is just a blip in the big picture I think. Just going to grind it out. I think it will feel good to finish it too, something I can be proud of.
@K3
1. Enlisted
a. 4 years active (4 sat years)
b. 4 years IRR (2 sat years)
2. Officer
a. 4 years SMCR on ADSW (4 sat years)
b. 4 years IRR (0 sat years)
Total: 10 sat years and no more gun club for this guy 👍🏼
I am 10 years away, O3 with 2 kids. Same boat, It's hard as fuck.
What are your MOS? I'd like to see the comparison of difficulty of staying in as enlisted vs officer while consulting.
I've been thinking of going back in.
PwC - Mannnn I know - what are you going to do?
I got out of the Reserve with 8-12 years in because I thought it was too challenging to manage both. BCG’s healthcare is incredible, which made the decision easier
KMPG - Yes, definitely not "1weekend a month, 2 weeks per year," however, I have a very flexible commander which really helps.
Retiring from USMC reserve next year. I've got a pretty good Reserve gig, very flexible, so no complaints here. If you don't care about promotions and career track in the reserve do what you want to do and find something very flexible like IMA.
I was thinking about hitting MAJ and going IMA
K1, not following your situation re sat years and your active and reserve time. Can you provide more detail? Something doesn't sound right. I've got a mix of active and Reserve time as well, retiring next year.
KPMG - Yea if I was at 10 sat years (satisfactory) - I would be getting out. Once 2018 is completed (I'm not counting the rest of 2017) I'll have 4 years left.
KPMG User 3 - Congrats! Rank you will retire at? Glad you stuck it out?
K1, I got it, thanks.
Maj, got a decent amount of points. I'm glad I stuck it out, but it stopped being fun a while ago.
KPMG 3 - Definitely stopped being fun - 3 years ago
How many points? I think I'll have like 4,000 or so.
About 7100 by the time I retire in May of 18
