529 accounts. Who’s using them and how much are you trying to save per kid? I can’t decide if they make sense or not given the uncertainty of the future. We have plenty of regular savings. The question is just about how much to put into 529 accounts.

I opened one for my one year old last year and superfunded it with 50k. Not sure what will happen with education in the future but willing to take the risk that we’ll find a way for the funds to be used and take advantage of the tax free growth.

Not planning to put more in it and recently started a UTMA for cash gifts given directly to the kid.

My State allows 4K in tax deductions, so that’s what I contributed for our newborn last year. Will do 4K/year for a few years then let compounding take over. I do not intend to fully fund their education so I’m not trying to plow tons of money in, just taking the tax advantages

like

Front loading. 30k for each kid, 6 and 4yo for reference. Going to do 30k again this year and call it done.

Still prioritizing our retirement first though.

Idk our kid has like $5k total and he is 3. Other kid is 1 and has nothing yet. Not focusing my energy or money on funding their schooling. Maybe once other things in life are settled like helping my parents with things etc I will do more for their 529

My dad fully funded my tuition with this vehicle. Target date with monthly contributions. If it’s not used it’s a great way to pass on wealth to the next generation. Qualified distributions are not taxed. It’s pretty wide ranging. Can be used for a lot of educational expenses even room/board.

like

Look into your states rules and if they allow tax deductions for 529 contributions. This may impact how much you want to contribute.

I’m in MD and I believe the deduction is only for lower income folks but I could remember incorrectly. Somehow it didn’t apply to us

I put in $250/mo with occasional extra deposits. I’m not going to sacrifice better tax advantaged deposits or savings for bigger goals, but figure $250 would just get spent on dumb stuff elsewhere so we can spare it.

Have about $10k for our almost 2 year old from doing the max mass deduction (2k) a year. Grandparents have also pledged additional amounts.

529s are pretty good plans once 401k/Ira/HSA are maxed.

I do it for state tax deduction. I have three accounts that I contribute. I find it to be a useful vehicle.

15 month old has 25k in it, our goal is to put in 1000 a month and to reach 100k before 1st grade at which point we may scale down to 500/month. We estimate we will need 450k for private college

65K ish for each kid (6/8 years old). Started about 4 years ago and averaged 10-15K a year

Anyone knows if it is easier to get a mortgage for an investment property than for second home? Mortgage specialist from a bank I worked with for my first purchase said rates would be a bit higher for rental property and cannot use gift money for downpayment. How does rental income come into place in the whole process? How can potential rental income reduce my rates or upfront cash outflow? Also should I use the same bank for this second mortgage? Any recommendations? Thank you in advance.

I don’t have anyone to share this with so sharing here! En route to 200k by this summer. Just turned 26 in December and paid off student loans aggressively in my first few years in consulting. A lot of this was helped by moving home for COVID but feeling so thankful since my parents immigrated to this country and I am essentially their retirement plan.
Going to business school this fall so documenting before that next big investment. HUGE thanks to this group for teaching me everything. Go team!
