Wow, the entitlement level is high with this one. Per diem is a benefit, as in you could get nothing. I was in your shoes, traveling 100%, living in a Fairfield inn 100 ft off a freeway. You could tell it was time to get up when you could hear the semi traffic pick up. I’d get in town, go to the grocery store for the week’s lunches, eat dinner cheaply, then pocket the rest. Guess what...2+ weeks in Italy were paid for by the time the project wrapped.
Seems to me your priority is more focused on “getting what you deserve” versus looking at what you could get, and your priority is dictating your choices. You want fancy dinners, then cough up the cash. Otherwise, find a new company.
(Sidenote: I’m from the Midwest and transplanted to a major metro...you can 100% eat well on $55/day in the Midwest. If you can’t figure that out, I question your consulting/problem solving skills).
Key takeaway was toward the end: “Find a new company”
Per diems are not meant to pay for all your food. It’s meant to supplement what you are normally spending on food because you’re traveling.
55 is reasonable if you’re out in the mid west. You don’t need to have a sit down breakfast and a sit down lunch and a sit down dinner. Not to mention I am sure your hotel provides a free breakfast.
If you’re spending a 100 bucks a day on food and it’s not in NYC or SFO you’re spending money irresponsibly.
55 a day say you travel four days a week and travel four times a month. 880 bucks for food a month? Versus sitting at home not having anyone pay for your food? Let’s be realistic on what you’d prefer.
Skip the $32 lunch?
You can buy seeds and grow a garden. When the vegetables are grown you can sell them and live off the proceeds to feed yourself more like a human being than your per diem will allow.
It’s a shame this wasn’t closer to the top for more to enjoy. This is hilarious
This is such a first world**** problem!!! Stop even complaining. We are lucky we even get money to spend
If the market is willing to pay for it i am willing to spend it. #SimpleGuy
Now I’m more confused...you’re staying at a Hampton and buying breakfast?

What firm is this so I can avoid?
@ATK2 yes, but our dinner allowance is still higher than this guy’s entire per diem...
Buy power bars for $20 and do the consultant challenge (pocket $200 by the end of the week).
Re: eating at all - amateurs 😂
Imagine being this out of touch.
I’m in Cali. Breakfast was $5. Lunch was $8. Yogurt / salad. Not sure why a “sit down” for dinner is the expectation.
Most of my dinners are $10-$12
Relax. I’m in nyc with $52 per diem. Eat less/spend your own money
$1 pizza. Nom.
try a Wendy's 4 for $4
Wait how the hell did you go from 55 to 23?
Maybe don’t have lobster for lunch?
Does your day consist of only lunch and dinner? What about coffee, water, breakfast, snacks, etc? Also you should try Luke's Lobster. Great lunch for about $25.
It’s sad to think about that there are some people who work 8 hours in a day that barely make 55 dollars.
OP, stop buying breakfast donuts everyday, or buy more power bars.
I’ve lived on 45 per diem in SF for a few weeks, it was rough but made me appreciate chipotle more and more.
I keep saying it. Chipotle food/value/quality ratio is highest by far!
Do you spend $55/day at home on days when you don’t cook?
Most of my dinners are sub-$10 and still healthy
Oh I cook my meals. Healthy less than 10
First. World. Problems.
We. Live. In. The. First. World.
That’s some cheap ass bullshit
Either have a $23 dinner or spend some of your own $$ if you must feast like a king
Follow up question - can you spend $23 at chipotle and live to tell the tale?
Yes, triple steak with guac for life!
Try intermittent fasting 😂
Not much sympathy here, not to be rude. If you’re in NYC or Cali ehhh I guess but that’s plenty of money. Really in no circumstance, other than in our lifestyles, would you eve consider eating a $30 lunch on the regular basis—I’m guilty of it too but don’t let getting a per diem empower you to spend silly
