57- renting month to month for past 3 years and looking to purchase home again. Between equity proceeds from earlier home sale and combined new savings, total savings approx $900k. Do I invest all in the home purchase (prob 1.1- 1.4m range) or no, I don’t want a big mortgage at my age and always concerned with job security. I make about $525k. Wife earns about $150k if I lost my job worse case. Im earning about $2700 per@month now in a Fidelity high interest account.

Do you have assets other than the $900k? I like the idea of not having a big mortgage in retirement too but I wouldn’t spend all my money on a house. If you have other assets, then go for it.

Off topic, but important. What's are the fees on that Fidelity account?

Is it in a Fidelity product? 🚩

No one talks about the fees - there's a management fee + expense ratio, and they're usually more than what a boutique fiduciary firm would charge. You're paying for the brand at Fidelity.

Total savings that's not in a retirement account is $900k? If so, I'd maybe keep 6 months emergency expenses and use the rest to have smallest mortgage as possible. I mean, with that income you could have the rest paid off in a year or less...

like

Yea, this is sep from retirement savings. I probably have $100k on the sidelines for emergencies in addition to the $900k

If you have material retirement and the 100k emergency, then yes, I would throw the full 900k at the new house.

I have a 25K loan from my MBA. I paid off 100k whole, after graduation. 3 years ago, I moved my loan from federal to private ( SOFI) account. I recently lost my job. I have applied for unemployment, as the severance that I received will only cover for 2 months. Together my husband and I used to make less than 250k after tax. Now, with a loss of pay , we are going to make less. Do you think I will be eligible for Loan forgiveness?

Couple of dumb questions, but thought I’d ask in hopes that I can get back on course. 24M with the following assets: ~$30k HYSA, ~$6,600 Fidelity Roth 401k from old employer, ~$14k Vanguard (60% traditional 401k, 4% Roth 401k), $13.5k M1 Taxable acct (ETFs). I make ~$100k annually (salary+bonus). I’m contributing the max to my 401k as of this year. Questions below:

Genuine question…
I have about $3M in net worth (retirement accounts, stock market investments, checking and savings account) Additionally, I have two homes about $1.2M in average market worth. Have been thinking about FIRE but at 2.5% rule I’m looking at about $100K in income annually and about $28K from rental income. Age is 48 going to 49. And one kid yet to start school = $200K college expense. What would you suggest possible options can look like for retirement?

I think it will be cool for him to see all the purchase dates fall on his birthdays and teach him about long term investment
