Pay off the debt first, I'd say. Then when the recession comes you'll be in an even better position to find the place you want

Calculate it out- if the rent you would be paying is more than your maintenance costs on a place you own + property taxes + interest, then it's technically a good move. But you also have to account for the risk of the property depreciating, the risk you'll lose your job and be unable to afford the payments, realtor costs, etc. etc. No easy answer.
