There’s this guy, David Boies - you should meet him
It’s pretty rare for people to strike it out on their own and do super well. But it happens. Keeping my eyes on Selendy & Gay
I know a dozen people who have done it, mostly successfully. It’s harder than you think. Where will you get work? Who will you confer with when you have questions? Who is going to do your bills, order paper, and get the copier fixed? Who is going to cover for you when you want to take a vacation on which you don’t check email? It’s not impossible but there’s a lot to it and many lawyers aren’t good at the business side. I agree that you should join the local bar and seek out solos. Also look for local work sharing offices populated by lawyers. Many have soft internal referral mechanisms and present work sharing and coverage options. You should also ask yourself honestly if you’re fully competent and sufficiently experienced to do the work you want to do without the safety net of a firm. If not, before you jump you need to fill any gaps you see.
Join a bar association and talk to the non big law attorneys.
