Sometimes, very rarely, you catch a break in life. Being a summer associate is one of those times. Also, you definitely pay a penance for all that fun as a first-year associate

I'd guess a lot of it is just promoting the firm in a way. "Look how much money we have to pay you obscene amounts for the novice work you do, and still send you to events and expensive meals."
