Congratulations! I have spent my whole career prospering in Biglaw, have two kids who are young adults and am still married to their mother. The four of us have a fabulous relationship. If that’s what you aspire to, start planning now to never miss a sports event, school conference, or music recital. Live below your means and save for college starting now. Also plan on limits to your earnings caused by not working all the time and set and stick to boundaries. For example last night a client texted me at 630 on a Friday night asking for a call. I told him that I was cooking paella for 7 guests and would call him this am. I once asked for a one day recess in a nine week out of town jury trial so I could fly home to attend my daughter’s 8th grade graduation. Another time I asked a judge to adjourn a trial a couple of hours early one day so I could attend my son’s high school playoff soccer game. I have never had a request like that denied. But you and your wife have to take the time now to decide on the family life you want. And then confidently and firmly conform your work life to your family life. It takes guts and a lot of work when others are sleeping but it is possible and very rewarding. My daughter came home for the holidays last night. She’s 23, has a great job in a faraway city, and we still talk 3-4 times a week on the phone and have hugs that are just like when she was 2. One of the things that light my life most brightly. Good luck to you, your wife, and your child. It’s a wonderful adventure.
Thank you. Having two great kids is the best of many things I’ve done in my life and a lovely legacy.
Congrats! Now see if you can get your hours down at all- best times of your family life are coming up. Don't waste them working. (Unless you're a work fanatic :))
Congrats OP.. you are going to be a parent soon!
