My firm does not offer reimbursement for bar course.. Should I still take one, or is self-study sufficient?

Self-study.. and be prepared to suffer the consequences

Not failing the bar is certainly worth spending $5k, this isn't astronomical compared to law school student loans (also assuming you've secured a full-time offer)

A bar prep course (like Kaplan) will set you back $1600 if you get it now. You can also haggle with the companies to get a better deal.

Taking the course takes a lot of the stress and guesswork out, and the prices are lower when you aren’t firm billing. I would talk to your school and the bar prep reps to see what kind of discounts are available. I was able to take Themis for about $1500.

Agreed. I saved a lot with Themis and had no issues with the course whatsoever.

Take the course

Barbri

Take the course if this is your first bar. I took the course even for my second bar, but I’m leaning towards self study for my third state bar (I passed the first time for the 2 prior)

Take the course, it's not worth chancing it.

Go Barbri or go home tbh

Not true anymore, unless you can attend the in-person sessions and that’s worth it to you. Not worth the extra $$ IMOH. Used Themis, no supplements, and passed with 50 points to spare in an MBE jurisdiction. Hadn’t taken crim pro, evidence, secured transactions, or family law.

Of course take one lol

Take one and just negotiate among Kaplan and Barbri - they’ll usually price match one another and you can get them to compete a little. Also, may be too late, but usually if you “table” for the company (ie try and get people to sign up at law school) you’ll get either a significant discount or the entire course for free. Find out if there’s still options for you to do this bcos it’s well worth it

Agree with this—negotiate the price as much as you can. I signed up for Barbri’s live video course two days before it started and I negotiated it down to $1,500.

I think it really depends on how you study. I bought the MBE questions from Adaptibar and used a friends old books but didn’t take a class and I passed. I had friends who mostly watched lectures from their classes and did practice problems but didn’t read. I think you definitely will need some supplemental support but what that looks like and the cost can definitely be fitted towards your study style.

I think you should get it because if you fail you can say that you tried everything. I got the program and once it stopped being useful I moved to other ways of studying. It gave me a peace of mind that I covered all the bases

Also depends on the bar you are taking. Would definitely not self study for CA

Take the course. I took a barbri course for my first bar and passed and self studied for my second bar and passed. You definitely need to know how to study and what to study for the bar and the course can help you learn that.

Take the course. The $3-5k is worth it.

Themis I used twice and they can sometimes give you a deal if you find the right rep. My firm did pay but the cost was much lower and I thought they were fantastic
