I don't disagree with you...I've tried writing canned, simple cover letters but they never work. Any interview I've ever gotten has been through a personal connection, not an online application

They really should be done away with, especially where a writing sample is required.

That said, at my last firm we got a clerk resume once that was objectively fine, but the cover letter said something about how much they wanted to practice in criminal law someday. You will not find the word criminal anywhere on our firm website. So it did actually help in realizing the candidate was an idiot.

I think that’s the point. It’s just a gatekeeping mechanism to keep the number of applications manageable.

You can write a canned cover letter in which you only have to change maybe one sentence in the intro and one paragraph describing the specific position. That’s what I did for OCI.
