6 months into consulting and bored of being aligned to only 1 industry. Thinking of switching to a small firm but is there a long term career benefit of staying at a big 4 firm for a couple of years?

Patience and some networking could serve you. And yes. Stay put.

Agreed.

6 mos on the resume is bad - stick it out awhile longer. Take the brand boost with you later

All industries are boring. I've worked with hospitality, healthcare, retail, apparel, financial services, and fitness. They all have similar problems.

I think one industry focus is awesome. Eventually you can answer the clients questions on how others do things which i think is so valuable to the client. Obviously different story if you don’t like the industry

PwC recruits to people to be industry aligned though, this may not be a good match for you.

Ehh... half true statement for new hires

I think staying a while longer is good as well, but I would like to offer an alternative, small business perspective. I spent about 10 years in a small consulting firm (around 250 employees). Benefits: 1) Director in a year and partner in 2 years. 2) Great work/life balance. 3) Engagements were fixed fee lasting around 2-3 weeks - new clients every month. 4) Opportunities to tackle pretty much any engagement or opportunity you could wrap your head around (pen testing, audit, compliance, etc.). If you were intellectually curious, it was a blast. Challenges 1) As a minority partner, I had (virtually) no say when the ‘right buyout offer’ came along. I received a modest payout and was obligated to move to another firm or start one. 2) Pay was significantly less and benefits weren’t great. 3) Performance was determined much more subjectively (limited metrics, etc.). This could be good or bad based on circumstances, I presume. Best of luck!

At least one year. Faster than that and it looks like you either got fired or you are a person who gives up too easily

Agreed!

This is same as another post asking if he shud move out after 4 months..and just started his career. Not sure whats the rush to jump to other industries. Every industry is vast and has its share of problems. They all can be boring or if you can think through, they all can be challenging. Type of work and depth of skill changes after couple years in. Consulting is a great place to learn an industry, basic biz skills, network and building confidence within a domain. Need patience and an open outlook. Abt tenure, atleast 1 year but more the better.

My (white) manager consistently gives me feedback that I’m “very literal” when doing assignments. She asks for something, I do what her directions say, and she tells me “oh you took that very literally. You’re very literal.” Obviously consulting is subjective and we’ve all had managers give vague directions leading to multiple iterations of work, but at what point do I push back? I’ve also noticed her say this about several black colleagues including clients and the senior mgr on the project.
