Get a high GMAT and explain your GPA in the optional essay

I used optional essay to explain my 3.0.... accepted at Booth, Ross, Darren, ding at Kellogg. 720 GMAT. Lots of good stories, worked a ton on essays, had to nail the interview.

Poor you

My brother had a 2.9 in chemistry, similar work experience and rocked a 760 on the GMAT. He went to Haas. Was accepted at Duke and UNC as well. Good luck!

like

@OP. He went to UVA.

KPMG1... Ross, fella. Meeechigan.

2.9 here. T25 school/T10 engineering program. Def not an excuse though. M7 (in R3 no less) and BCG. Similar years as you, but for no-name in industry. Smoked the GMAT. It can happen...

like

OP - worked full time to put myself through undergrad; that's the reason I cited in the additional essay. Also, had a major change in there that 'helped' - but needed to work 40-45 a week to make it happen... don't sell that short. That's a good story and NO reason to hang your head. Ever.

Kpmg1 where did he go undergrad? (If you don't feel comfortable sharing, perhaps just share if it was already a top undergrad school or not)

Congrats Consultant 1, that's inspiring. Where did you decide on?

OP - went to Ross. Loved it. Am from Michigan originally, felt good to be home for a while... the experience there was top notch. Side note - on that optional essay, I was uber open about the reason for the low undergrad gpa and it came up in the interview. Graduated with honors from Ross... don't let anyone tell you ya can't get in. Create the whole package - be humble and honest - and show your potential & impact. Post or message a burner, and happy to connect should you desire.

Kpmg1, UVA is still a far better school than I went to undergrad :/

BCG1 - thank you for sharing. 2.9 in engineering from a t25 is still very respectable. I received my gpa in business (changed my major a few times and was going through some personal problems). I also was working fulltime throughout undergrad. I know that's not an excuse

Does mba help in pivoting to consulting? I want to learn more about business + do strategy work and I’m not sure if I’m getting that in tech. Undergrad major was econ and was very theoretical (didn’t learn anything about business). Have done interviews with all MBBs in the past but either didn’t pass assessment stage or didn’t make it pass the case interviews. Feedback was that I need to improve business judgement for case interviews.

Almost 5 years at a top 10 firm with a job offer at B4 for a 20% pay jump, is it worth taking the risk with further layoffs still being talked about? B4 will look better on my resume and the money will be nice, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the stress of a B4 lifestyle and potentially getting fired in a few months anyways.

Hi Fishes, Need some inputs Thanks in advance. I have total 13 YoE 11 of which are in tech consulting (Non Big 4) I have an offer from EY and they have indicated base pay as 145K for senior consultant position. I feel it's low. Can you please suggest how much should be fair base compensation for this role?

In the process of being promoted @B4 but I don’t like the people I work for and I’m on the project from hell. The promo has taken so long that I’ve looked elsewhere despite it being my 2nd promo in 3 years. I haven’t had much traction until this past week where I was approached by 4 recruiters with really compelling roles (including FAANG). I know it doesn’t hurt to talk to them but am I an ass for excepting the promo while continuing to look/possibly exiting in the near future?

I am joining EY at rank 42 . What relocation reimbursement cap can I expect as nothing is explicitly mentioned in the offer letter. Also, my previous firm is making me pay back the retention bonus and also recovering the certification cost since I am leaving with an year of certifications. Will any of this amount be covered under notice pay reimbursement ?

Has anyone found the AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification to be helpful for people in non-technical roles? Any experience in how potential employers view this cert would be greatly appreciated!

Thoughts on living in Hoboken? I currently have apt in East Village but haven’t moved due to covid and lease expires soon. I’m starting to like the idea of Hoboken, especially since my office will be in Hudson Yards. Post-covid, I also think I’m less tied to living inside Manhattan too. I want space and feel like I could maybe even keep my car with me in Hoboken. Seems generally cheaper too, but I’m less concerned about price than quality of life. Would definitely prefer more bang for $. Thanks!
