6th year in big law in litigation. Lateraled a little over 2 years ago and billed over 2400 hours last year (2k requirement) but miserable in toxic work environment. Thoughts on my chances of another lateral move in big law without any clients of my own?

Agree. I’m still moving 6th years even in lit. I’m struggling with an 8th yr lit candidate though. Lit in TX is slow but I have 4 good jobs right now in Houston alone so there are openings. Just be prepared a job search can take longer as you get more senior. But it’s very achievable.

You should have no problem lateraling to a firm that pays below market after the first year.

like

I know everyone is talking about corporate right now, but I've been getting tons of contact from recruiters. And my firm has really been struggling to hire good lit associates because we don't pay market. I do think there is plenty of movement in litigation right now too. Last year we hired a 6th year for lit because he was the best we could find. Just realize that the expectations are going to be higher when you walk in the door.

like

Lots of recruiters will tell you lit is slow compared to transaction right now, but reach out to your contacts, there are definitely firms looking. 6th year is not so senior that they will expect you to have a book of business.

like

Thank you!

I would not expect book of business as a 6th year. You’re not too late but you’re getting up there so I’d start looking now.

Recognizing that every firm is toxic in its own way, I just used that description without expounding on the unique hell that is my current practice group.

You should be able to, depending on the market and the type of litigation. Most firms typically look for 2-5 years, but 6 years is not far out of range. Also, as A1 said, movement in litigation is slower than corporate right now, but there are still jobs out there.

5-7 are the last years before the question of book is at the forefront - feel free to DM to connect on LinkedIn

Got covid from the UK , double vaxxed , and symptoms are wildly atrocious. Everyday I have different issues. I went from no fever to 102.4 in a couple of minutes. Blood oxygen dropped dangerously low and bounced back in a few minutes. Chills , cold sweats. My newest one is that my legs are so achey and sore it feels like they were beaten with a bat , just nonstop pain and can’t sleep. Anyone else experience these? Pretty sure I’d be hospitalized at a minimum without the vax

Curious if anyone has experiences they could share of transitioning from Biglaw in US to positions in Europe, namely UK, Germany, and Belgium. Are those positions mostly limited to in-house at foreign-based companies, or is firm placement an option (assuming not simply transferring to a European office of your firm).

Question for the Biglaw Bowl: How common is it to take a pay cut when being promoted from associate to income partner? I had heard about this happening at some lower ranked V100 firms. But now that I’m more senior and my friends are making partner, it sounds like it’s a lot more common than I thought and happens at firms where I wouldn’t expect it. Does anyone here have any insight into this? How common is it, how much of a pay cut, and how long until your pay catches up to associate pay?
