I feel the same way. What my friends who are now executives tell me is that you need to find the confidence to ask for what you want and make necessary moves to get to the next step. Even if that means leaving the team or company. If you want to be promoted ask your manager to outline the necessary steps to get there. If they make excuses or don’t execute on promises made then it’s time to move on.
This happened to me. I job hopped to manager title. And after 3 years at this level, recruiters still approach me for analyst openings!
Is it safe to assume you're a minority and a woman? I'm Asian American and learned long ago that the way I was raised culturally and the societal messages of being a "quiet good girl" hurts others like me in the work place.
We are raised/receive messages that tell us that working hard will be rewarded and someone will notice.
That harsh reality is that its not what works in corporate America. You need to speak up, toot your own horn, and ask for what you want, which may be uncomfortable if you come from a culture where that is considered rude and those behaviors are frowned upon.
Management is too busy to think about promoting anyone unless they are being asked.
I'd highly recommend reading "Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide." Women lose over $1M in earnings over their careers simply by not asking for what they want.
The funny thing about speaking up for want you want as a minority and woman is you’re labelled aggressive or power hungry. If the minimum time for a promotion is 2 years and you feel ready, schedule a meeting at the 18th month mark to see if you and your manager are on the same page, the slightest hesitation on their part is your cue to jump ship.
I agree. An analyst with 7 years of experience? You sound like you should at least be an associate by now, although I think VP level would be more appropriate. Have you ever had any discussions with you manager about this?
You could also shop around. Job hopping is an easy way to get a raise or better title. It wouldn’t hurt to interview for one of those LinkedIn positions and state that you feel more qualified for a VP level role. Or you could even try applying to positions that are hiring at a VP level
It’s hard to skip corporate titles but it’s not impossible. You should be moving up the ladder every 2-3 years.
Recruiters usually have a lot of analyst roles to fill compared to AVP and VP so don’t take it personally.
Go for an associate role outside of your company, spend a year there then job hop again somewhere else at AVP. Sadly no one’s going to say to you that you deserve a promotion you have to take matters into your own hands and command your worth.
Yep, one of my colleague didn’t get promoted to senior manager and he took exactly 18 days to start SM role with a competitor bank 😂
